This collection contains personal papers, manuscripts, and notes of Dr. George West Diehl, articles on local history, and the genealogical papers of Mr. and Mrs. Zink, who donated the collection. The collection consists of more than 1,000 folders on Rockbridge County genealogy and history arranged by subject. Charles E. Zink, Dr. Diehl's foster son, contributed additional material to some of the genealogical files after Diehl's death in 1975.The personal papers include manuscripts of Dr. Diehl's books and research notes, bulletins and other material relating to Oxford Presbyterian Church, sermons, lectures, notes and duplicated items from the Rockbridge County School Board, one box of Iva S. Diehl papers, certificates, diplomas, and plaques. Genealogies include general genealogical aids and research files on families from Rockbridge, Augusta, and Botetourt counties, particularly Scotch-Irish and German lines. A local history series within the collection includes research notes, pamphlet, and general material on state and local history. Of particular interest are the Civil War Centennial ephemera and George West Diehl's unpublished history of Stonewall Jackson in Lexington, VA.
