Abstract Or Scope

Westmoreland County (Va.) Judgments (Freedom Suits), 1810-1858, consist of suits initiated by slaves seeking to gain their freedom on the law side of the court. Cases are identified by style of suit consisting of plaintiff and defendant names. Surnames of others involved in a suit, including secondary plaintiffs and defendants, witnesses, deponents and affiants, and family members with surnames different from the plaintiff or defendant are indexed. Also identified are names of slaves and slaveowners found in suit as well as whether slave(s) won their freedom. Predominant documents found in freedom suits include petitions, records of suits, depositions, affidavits, wills, among other items. Information found in documents include slave's argument for freedom, acquisition of slaves by slaveowners, slave ancestry, and relationship between slaves and slaveowners.

Westmoreland County (Va.) Naturalization Records, 1852-1909, consists of loose naturalization records filed in the local court. Loose naturalization records may include affidavits, reports for naturalization, declarations of intent to become United States citizens, and notices of application for admission of citizenship. The reports are narrative accounts made by applicants summarizing their journey to the United States. The declarations of intent record the person's name, place of birth, age, country of previous citizenship, renunciation of allegiance and fidelity to the nation of which the person is currently a citizen, and the date the intention was sworn. Affidavits, signed by those who knew the applicant and could vouch for their loyalty to the United States, may also be filed with the reports and declarations.

Included are bills and correspondence for repairing and fireproofing the clerk's office, 1822-1900; contracts for constructing the courthouse, 1824-1848; bills, commissions, and reports related to the jail, 1811-1832; jail inspectors' reports, 1810-1912, undated; and sundry materials covering the time period 1821 through 1905, and concern a portraits of Lord Chatham and George Washington, landscaping the public square, preparation of a stone monument to Washington, and a petition for a bell.

Westmoreland County (Va.) Register of Children of Colored Persons in Westmoreland County, State of Virginia, whose Parents had ceased to cohabit on 27th February, 1866, which the Father recognizes to be his. Also commonly called Westmoreland County (Va.) Cohabitation Register. This register lists the name of the child, age, place of birth, residence, last owner, residence of the last owner, residence of father, his age and last owner, residence of last owner of father, name of mother, her age, her residence if alive or noted if dead, last owner of mother, residence of last owner of mother, and the signature of the father. Comments under the column for the residence of the mother if alive include notations of a rough date of death, or that she has been sold away, left, or was immoral. County of residence is noted if known and is other than Westmoreland. The collection exists as inkjet prints, microfilm, and digital images with a searchable transcription through the Library of Virginia's Virginia Memory website.
