Scope and Content: This collection was originally assembled by Esther Maria Lewis Chapin, who inherited some of the Washington and Custis papers but was also an avid collector. She reassembled family materials that were being dispersed nationwide, much of which was purchased at Anderson Galleries, sale 22001, 28-29 November 1927. The collection contains correspondence, legal documents, and financial records related primarily to the Custis and Lewis families. Much of the financial and legal materials focus on the construction of the New Tomb at Mount Vernon, as well as settling George Washington's estate.The dates of the material in this collection ranges from 1743-1852, with the bulk of the material dating between 1818-1829.

Excerpts from George Washington and George Cabot letters to Timothy Pickering 2 pages Box 32, Folder 1798.09.09

Manuscript copies of excerpts from two letters about the Quasi-War with France, supposedly provided to Alexander Hamilton circa September 1798. The first letter is from George Washington to Timothy Pickering, 9 September 1798. The second is from George Cabot to Timothy Pickering, 27 September 1798.

George Washington family bible 1 Volumes Shelf F : 6

King James version, containing the old and new testaments. Includes a page located in the book of Jeremiah, inscribed with family genealogical information. It lists the marriage date of Augustine Washington (ca. 1694-1743) and his second wife, Mary Ball (1708-1789), as well as the birth dates of their six children. George Washington, their eldest child, was born "about 10 in the Morning" on February 11, 1731/32, according to the Julian calendar then in use. The leather bound volume is missing the title page and has had extensive conservation work completed.
