Department of Medicine Housestaff and Chief Residents Photograph Collection, 1951-2012

Abstract Or Scope

This collection consists of 178 folders containing photographs from the University of Virginia Department of Medicine (DOM). Images include Housestaff and faculty group photographs (1957-2008), Chief Resident group photographs (1973-2012), and individual Chief Resident portraits (1951-1999). Additional images include two undated group photographs of DOM Department Chairs and a photograph commemorating a class award given to the Class of 1993. The images provide a visual history of the department over a span of six decades. Subjects in the Chief Resident portraits are identified, and some individuals in the group photographs are also identified, though many are unidentified at this time. The images were created by various photographers hired by the University of Virginia Health System.

The Philip S. Hench Walter Reed Yellow Fever Collection documents the work of the U.S. Army Yellow Fever Commission, the legacy of the commission’s discoveries, the lives of individuals who were connected to the commission, and twentieth century campaigns to shape public memory of the commission. Items in the collection date from 1800 to 1998, with the bulk of the items dating from 1864 to 1974. A wide range of formats are represented in the collection including, but not limited to the following: articles, artifacts, audiocassettes, bills (legislative records), biographies, charts (graphic documents), correspondence, diaries, editorials, interviews, journals (periodicals), magazines, maps, medical records, military records, negatives (photographic), notes, photographs, reports, reprints, scrapbooks, and speeches. Unique materials in the collection are supplemented with copies of original documents and photographs housed in other institutions (e.g. the U.S. National Archives). Most of the materials in the collection were collected or created by Nobel laureate Philip Showalter Hench while researching the history of the U.S. Army Yellow Fever Commission.

Abstract Or Scope

The University of Virginia Health System Marketing Communications collection consists of 5 series. Series I through Series IV contain 737 processed folders in 6 records boxes. The images in this collection were created by and/or for the University of Virginia Health System’s Department of Marketing Communications to document the people, premises, and events of the UVA Health System, the UVA School of Medicine, and the UVA School of Nursing. These four series hold photographic prints, negatives, and slides, and also contain some published materials and assorted Marketing Communications papers and correspondence related to past Marketing Communications publications. The images provide a visual history of the University of Virginia’s work in medical education and medical care throughout the twentieth century. Series V of the collection contains 4 boxes of unprocessed slides, image CDs, and zip disks. At the time of processing some non-Health System materials present with the original acquisition were transferred to the Albert and Shirley Small Special Collections Library and the Arthur J. Morris Law Library.
