Abstract Or Scope

Records of the Union Baptist Church in Hopewell, Virginia. Items include meeting minutes, Deacon Board minutes and treasury records from 1935-1946. Also are records of newly joined members of the church from 1943- 1945, 1948-1949, and 1958- 1960. The collection also includes by-laws of the Deacon's Board, the first two newsletters of the "Sunday School News" published by Union Baptist, drafts and revisions of "Out of Our Past"; a history of the Union Baptist Church, programs paying tribute to Mrs. Ruth J. Harris and Dr. Curtis W. Harris, Reverend of Union Baptist Church (1961-2007), and two sermons given by Dr. Harris. Various brochures and programs of events in which Dr. and Mrs. Harris participated include a brochure for the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. monument, program for Dr. Harris's "Farewell Service," and an article "The Boatwright Committee, Massive Resistance and contempt charges" describing Dr. Curtis Harris's interactions with the Boatwright Committee with regard to his nonviolent civil rights demosntrations in the late 1950's and early 1960's
