Rockbridge County (Va.) Judgments (Freedom Suits), 1809-1854, consist of suits initiated by slaves seeking to gain their freedom on the law side of the court. Cases are identified by style of suit consisting of plaintiff and defendant names. Surnames of others involved in a suit, including secondary plaintiffs and defendants, witnesses, deponents and affiants, and family members with surnames different from the plaintiff or defendant are indexed. Also identified are names of slaves and slaveowners found in suit as well as whether slave(s) won their freedom. Predominant documents found in freedom suits include petitions, records of suits, depositions, affidavits, wills, among other items. Information found in documents include slave's argument for freedom, acquisition of slaves by slaveowners, slave ancestry, and relationship between slaves and slaveowners.

Rockbridge County (Va.) Lists of Tithables, 1778-1781, consists of lists of tithable heads of household in the county for the years 1778-1781.

Rockbridge County (Va.) Minute Books, 1779-1889, record all matters brought before the court on a daily basis when it was in session including but not limited to: civil and criminal suits, appointments of county officers, appointments of guardians and administrators, deed recordings, free negro registrations, naturalization registrations, and court fees. Clerks would transfer information from minute books to appropriate order book, deed book, fiduciary book, free negro register, etc. Collection includes minute books from County Court and Superior Court of Law and Chancery.

Rockbridge County (Va.) Naturalization Records, 1826-1865, consists of loose naturalization records filed in the local court. Loose naturalization records may include affidavits, reports for naturalization, declarations of intent to become United States citizens, and notices of application for admission of citizenship. The reports are narrative accounts made by applicants summarizing their journey to the United States. The declarations of intent record the person's name, place of birth, age, country of previous citizenship, renunciation of allegiance and fidelity to the nation of which the person is currently a citizen, and the date the intention was sworn. Affidavits, signed by those who knew the applicant and could vouch for their loyalty to the United States, may also be filed with the reports and declarations.

The Rockbridge County (Va.) Poor House Register is one volume dated 1887-1927. The register gives the name of the people living in the poor house, their age when they were admitted, the district from which they came, and the date when discharged. There is a column for remarks. This column tells what happened to the people. It gives the dates of death, the name of a person a people went to live with after living in the poor house, or the place the inmate moved to when they left the poor house. There is a section of the book that gives birth dates for children born in the poor house between July 16, 1887 and May 14, 1918. There is another section with death dates for people dying in the poor house or county farm between August 4, 1887 and June 18, 1927.
