Scope and Content: This collection was originally assembled by Esther Maria Lewis Chapin, who inherited some of the Washington and Custis papers but was also an avid collector. She reassembled family materials that were being dispersed nationwide, much of which was purchased at Anderson Galleries, sale 22001, 28-29 November 1927. The collection contains correspondence, legal documents, and financial records related primarily to the Custis and Lewis families. Much of the financial and legal materials focus on the construction of the New Tomb at Mount Vernon, as well as settling George Washington's estate.The dates of the material in this collection ranges from 1743-1852, with the bulk of the material dating between 1818-1829.

This collection (269 letters) includes correspondence regarding family matters, farm business, legal questions about various wills, including that of George Washington, buying and selling of slaves and land, letters from friends, travels, and business interests. Also included are financial papers, including accounts and bills for various services, many dealing with daily life, building materials, education expenses, books, taxes paid/owed, and financial transactions.

Lawrence Lewis to William Costin, with postscript from Eleanor Parke Custis Lewis, 1813 Box 4, Folder 01

Letter written by Lawrence Lewis to William "Billy" Costin requesting Costin's service in transporting his family from Mr. Charles Carter's residence in Culpepper County to their home. Lewis provides a suggested route and expected arrival date stating, 'you must not disappoint me.' A postscript in the hand of Eleanor Parke Custis Lewis requests additional and immediate transportation for herself to Philadelphia. She offers Costin's mother payment in Pork if she will accompany them on the trip. Autograph letter signed, 1 page, with integral address panel.

Letter, Lawrence Lewis to Gabriel Lewis, 1806 Box 40, Folder 1806.05.25

A.L.S. 2 pages. Woodlawn. Gen. Mason going to Kentucky will carry this letter -- acknowledges payment of $40 -- Warner was with them, mentions his trip to Orleans -- their father [John Lewis] is well -- speaks of Dr. Stuart's land in Mason County, Ky., 5000 acres on Tripletts creek and 9000 on Locust creek -- advertised for sale -- he sends tax money by Gen. Mason -- asks Gabriel Lewis to help Mason -- talks of affairs of the day -- the ship Leander -- General Miranda landed in Spanish America, the province of Caraccas, takes the island of Marquireta, the towns of Camana -- Barcelona on the river Neveri, in full march for the capital of the colony -- this information by Capt. Risbrough from Martinique, Miranda has proclaimed the independence of the province. Concludes with a full 2 page postscript by Nelly, here separately cataloged. Autograph letter signed, with 2 p. additional note by Nelly Custis Lewis, cover marked "Hond by Genl. Tomson Mason, laminated. Name on original manuscript appears as "Lawr. Lewis."

A.D.S. Appoints Lorenzo Lewis of Audley, Clark County [now Frederick County, Va.] as attorney to act for her in her dower rights as widow of Lawrence Lewis. Autograph document signed, witnessed by Mary Custis Lee, proved before George W. P. Custis as one of the U. S. Justices for Cty of Alexandria, District of Columbia, laminated.
