Abstract Or Scope

Personal papers of Noah Henderson of Monongalia County, West Virginia, consisting mainly of incoming correspondence and financial and legal documents from 1859 to 1926. Collection chiefly contains deeds, state and county tax receipts, a survey and plat, and oil and gas lease documents from the 1860s to the 1900s. Other financial documents from 1910 to 1926 relate to bank accounts and settlement of Henderson's estate after his death in 1920. Letters from relatives in the 1890s and 1900s primarily describe the correspondents' health and weather. Also included are several letters written to Henderson by Alpheus Garrison, a Union soldier during the Civil War in the 17th West Virginia Infantry, between 1863 and 1866. Garrison writes briefly about winter quarters, a snowball fight, food, Confederate prisoners, and his mill.
