Business correspondence of U.S. Senator Stephen B. Elkins. Subjects include West Virginia coal companies, Morgantown and Kingwood Railroad, Berkeley Springs Hotel Company, Buckhannon Relief Oil and Gas Company, Allegheny Improvement Company, the Little Kanawha Syndicate, Wheeling Traction Company, West Virginia Bridge and Construction Company, Great Falls and Old Dominion Railroad, St. Louis and North Arkansas Railroad, Magistral Exploration Company of Mexico, and the Westernport Electric Railway Company. Correspondents include A. B. White, R. C. Kerens, Henry G. Davis, D. O. Mills, Ogden Mills, George C. Sturgiss, and William F. Sadler, Jr.

Correspondence and legal papers of Republican U.S. Senator (1895-1911) Stephen B. Elkins. There are letters (originals and copies) from James A. Garfield (3); U.S. Grant (2); William McKinley (1); William H. Taft (1); James G. Blaine (23); Benjamin Harrison (18); and other political and business associates. Other personal letters include various correspondents and their opinions of Elkins's speeches. The legal documents pertain to Elkins's New Mexico land interests and lawsuits resulting from his claims, particularly his legal suit with former Civil War General Benjamin F. Butler. Others interested in the New Mexico affairs include William C. Rencher, Abraham Staab, Adolph Staab, T. B. Catron, F. W. Risque, R. C. Kerens, John T. McCook, and Ehud N. Darling.

There is a photostat positive of page 2 of the New York Daily Tribune, dated Thursday, June 4, 1885, that contains a copy of an oration by Stephen Elkins, delivered at the University of Missouri, "Dangers that Menace the Country--Causes and Remedies." There also are blueprints that relate to Elkins's interests in New Mexico (Oversize Folder 1).

No trespassing sign for property of Stephen B. Elkins. It features black letters on linen stating "Notice, All persons are hereby notified Not To Trespass by hunting, fishing or otherwise on these premises. Violators Will Be Dealt With According To The Law. S. B. Elkins." There are three copies.

Elkins, Stephen B. (Stephen Benton), 1841-1911
Stephen Benton Elkins (b. 1841) represented West Virginia in the United States Senate as a Republican from 1895-1911. Prior to his Senate service, Elkins served in the Union Army during the Civil War as a captain in the Kansas Militia. He practiced law in the Territory of New Mexico in 1864 and served as a member of the Territorial House of Representatives, 1864-1865. He was the district attorney for the Territory from 1866-1867, and the United States district attorney for the Territory from 1867-1870. Around 1890, he founded and moved to the city of Elkins, WV. President Benjamin Harrison appointed him Secretary of War, 1891-1893. He died during his third Senate term in 1911 in Washington, DC. The Stephen B. Elkins collection includes speeches, maps, reports, photographs and other materials related to his political, business, and family affairs.

Letter file book containing thirty-seven letters to Stephen B. Elkins from various West Virginia counties concerning political outlook for the Republican Party in 1900. It lists leading Republicans for each voting district in each county and includes one letter from Elkins to A. Howard Fleming, Fairmont, WV, outlining information he would like to have about Marion County.

Elkins, Stephen B. (Stephen Benton), 1841-1911
Letter copy book kept by Stephen Benton Elkins, a politician and businessman who would later become a prominent citizen of West Virginia. The book was kept from 23 October 1875 to 1 May 1878. It contains roughly 150 letters as well as a partial index of recipients. During the time this book was kept, Elkins resided in Santa Fe, New Mexico, practiced law, represented the territory in Congress, and acted as president of the Maxwell Land Grant Company. Letters concern political and business topics, including Elkins's involvement with the Santa Fe Ring, an illegal land speculation group.
