These 41 Blueline prints and 40 Blueprints (the latter being two sets of 19 and 21 each) represent three sets of architectural drawings for two Grace Baptist Church building projects undertaken by the Richmond, Virginia, firm of Carneal and Johnston. The earliest drawing set (Commission #1186), dated July 6, 1948, depicts a new sanctuary building constructed on donated land in the Windsor Farms neighborhood of Richmond. This structure replaced an earlier sanctuary at the southeast corner of Grove Avenue and Boulevard in Richmond and was the result of a growing congregation and need for expansion. Additionally precipitating a need for a new structure, the earlier church building suffered a devestating fire on January 26, 1946. The drawings illustrate floor plans, elevations, sections, details, and mechanical plans for the sanctuary building.

The Carneal and Johnston University of Richmond architectural drawings and plans collections consists of 1210 sheets representing approximately forty-one distinct commissions as well as additional materials. The collection has been broken into two series. Series have been arranged for Commissions and Other Firms. The collection is housed in both rolled storage boxes and map cases. In some cases, due to the size of some materials, portions of a drawing set for a single commission may be located in both rolled storage and flat storage. The appropriate notations have been made to the finding aid in the form of a "see also" reference. The drawings have been organized by drawing title. Drawings without commission numbers have been noted as such and are identified only by their title. The date given on the container list is taken from the earliest date on the drawing and does not represent any revisions or addenda. This collection contains only architectural drawings and plans. No related correspondence or other documentary materials for the Carneal and Johnston firm are extant.

This accession consists of a single presentation drawing depicting a store and office building for Methodist Publishing Company, Richmond, Virginia, by Carneal & Johnston, Architects and Engineers. The structure is better known as the "Cokesbury Building" and is located at 5th and Grace Streets. The building is indicative of the style utilized in a number of 1920s commercial buildings. The inspiration for this ediface is the J. B. Mosby Dry Goods Store at 201-205 West Broad Street. Both are modern buildings that evoke the Italian palazzo. Carneal & Johnston were associate architects on the Mosby project.

The Carneal and Johnston Virginia Military Institute (VMI) architectural drawings and plans consist of 721 sheets. This represents approximately 56 separate commissions undertaken by the firm between 1918 and 1984 at the Lexington, Virginia, military school. Alexander Jackson Davis (1803-1892), a New York-born architect, originally planned VMI's barracks, professors' residences and other buildings during the mid-19th century. VMI was the first American college campus to be executed wholly in the Gothic Revival style. The bulk of the Carneal and Johnston material covers 1920 through 1976 and shows major renovations to existing buildings or new construction on the campus. The drawings depict elevations, floor plans, details, sections, and the like for VMI structures. Additionally, a few topographic and plat style maps are housed in the collection. The majority, if not all, of the correspondence from the Carneal and Johnston firm is no longer extant.
