Description:

The Washington and Lee University Special Collections and Archives Department houses over 1,000 unique manuscript collections including those of the Rockbridge Historical Society, The American Shakespeare Center, and the Mountain Valley Preservation Association. These collections vary greatly in size, format, and scope. Subjects covered within the collections are diverse and include concentrations in American and Virginia history, regional genealogy, history of propaganda, Southern literature, and theater.

It also houses over 10,000 photographs and prints. Beyond our photograph and print collections, which include scrapbooks, images can also be found within the manuscript collections and University Archives described above. Our photographic holdings vary greatly in size and include numerous formats representative of the evolution of the photographic process. Strengths are local and regional portraiture, landscapes and architecture, W&L University history, including athletics, and late 19th-century travel.

This collection includes letters to and from John L. Campbell, Dean at Washington and Lee University, as well as letters to, from, and concerning Frank J. Gilliam, who was a member of the Washington and Lee class of 1917, 1912-1926. Campbell and Gilliam correspond about several members of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity being unable to return for the next semester due to grades. They also correspond about a prospective student from Lynchburg.

Geology, mineral specimens, museums, and a meteor that fell in Virginia in 1877 constitute the primary subject matter of the collection. One letter dated November 17, 1883 is from John S. F. Batchen and Co., Cut Stone Contractors out of Chicago. The letter refers to the "first speciments for the Collection of Building and Ornamental Rocks for Washington and Lee." There is also correspondence from Henry Ward of Rochester, NY.

This collection contains primary and secondary resources pertaining to Robert E. Lee and the Lee family. Included are correspondences from, to, and about Lee and various family members; memorabilia, pamphlets, photographs, reminiscences, miscellaneous personal papers, family history and genealogy. The collection includes materials acquired from the Lee family and items donated to and purchased and compiled by W&L University since Lee's tenure as president of Washington College from 1865 - 1870. Adminstrative papers, such as President's Reports, etc..., from Robert E. Lee's presidency of the school may be found within the W&L University Archives. Magazine - "The Land We Love", 1868 Box 13, Folder 3

Robert E. Lee's copy of D.H. Hill's post Civil War magazine "The Land We Love," which published an article pertaining to the story of Lee's "Lost Dispatch" - an order by General Robert E. Lee directing movements of his Army of Northern Virginia during the Maryland Campaign of 1862. It was lost by an unidentified Confederate courier and found by Union soldiers and subsequently forwarded to Union General George B. McClellan. The contents of the dispatch influenced the battles of South Mountain and Antietam.

This collection contains three letters. One, dated March 7, 1863 written in Caroline County, Va. to Col. Boteler gives Jackson's theories of recommending soldiers for promotion. A second, which is dated Mar. 11, 1854 from Lexington, Va. to E.H.J. McCampbell, concerns Jackson resigning from the Franklin Society and Library Company of Lexington. The third letter, dated June 7, 1858, to Prof. J.L. Campbell describes the operation of the Lexington Colored Sabbath School.
