Albemarle County (Va.) affidavits pertaining to the military enlistment of Thomas Baber by Meriwether Lewis, 1798 Sep. The collection contains the affidavit of Susannah Baber stating that her son, age 17, was restrained of his liberty in the town of Charlottesville by Lewis under the pretense of his having enlisted as a soldier in the armies of the United States; a summons for Lewis to present Thomas Baber in court, and the affidavit of Lewis stating he enlisted Baber in the U.S. army.

Albemarle County (Va.) Apprenticeship Indentures, 1817-1887, are bonds and contracts of apprenticeship given by the Overseers of the Poor, showing the names of master and apprentice, the trade to be taught, details of the contract, the amount of the bond and the names of sureties. Many of the apprentices bound out prior to 1866 were free persons of color.

Albemarle County (Va.) Certificates of Importation, 1794, 1811-1818, sometimes entitled certificates of nonimportation, contain information whereby an enslaver swears that they have not imported the enslaved person from Africa and that the enslaver has not brought the enslaved person into Virginia with the purpose of selling the enslaved person. The enslaved person is sometimes named, but not always, and occasionally information is given as to age, birthdate, and the state the individuals are moving from.

Albemarle County (Va.) Deeds of Emancipation, 1785, 1798-1799, 1818-1864, include 29 deeds. The deeds typically record the name of enslaver, the name of the enslaved person or persons to be freed, the date the enslaved person or persons achieved freedom, and the date the manumission was proved or certified. Sometimes, the deeds describe the reason for emancipation or manumission. Deeds of emancipation could be generated after the enslaver's death by those executing a last will and testament.

Albemarle County (Va.) Fiduciary Records, 1789-1956 circa, include miscellaneous records filed in a local court by trustees, administrators, executors, guardians, and committees that related to the performance of their duties managing a person's estate. These records typically include the following; bonds, appraisements, audits, inventories, accounts, estate divisions, settlements, dowery records, etc. Information related to enslaved people are commonly found in these records.

Albemarle County (Va.) Judgment, Assignee of Archibald Roberston vs. Executor of Thomas Jefferson, 1828 Aug. Samuel Garland, Robertson's assignee, is suing to collect a debt of $6,160 from Thomas Jefferson's estate. The case records include a bond made by Jefferson in 1825.

Albemarle County (Va.) Judgment, Giovanni Antonio Giannini (John Antonio Gianinna) vs. Thomas Jefferson, 1798 Jan. Giannini is suing Jefferson for damages on a contract Giannini signed with Philip Mazzei, in Italy, in 1773. Jefferson is acting as Mazzei's security. Giannini is seeking compensation for return passage to Leghorn (Livorno), Italy, for himself and his family members, as promised in the 1773 contract. The case records contain Giannini's complaint, the contract between Giannini and Mazzei, in Italian, an English translation of the contract, exceptions of attorneys Philip Gooch and Thomas Carr, summonses for John Key; and Thomas Jefferson's plea, by his attorneys. Antonio Giannini, Maria Giannini and Nicolau Matelli were all parties to the contract, each to serve Mazzei for 5 years at the same rate of pay.

Albemarle County (Va.) Judgment, John Barrett, etc., vs. Thomas Jefferson, 1788 Aug. The case is a suit for payment on a bond assigned to Barrett by William Carr. Jefferson borrowed twenty pounds from Carr in 1783.
