Comuntzis was born in Morgantown, West Virginia on July 8, 1921. He received his undergraduate degree from West Virginia University, served in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers as a second lieutenant, and received a master's degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He was a member of the initial staff at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California and retired after 30 years of employment. Comuntzis died August 17, 1989 in Pasedena.
