Along with describing the native Hawaiian people, and the environment of Hawaii in detail, the letter names specific Hawaiians Meade met at a garden party. Meade writes that "to me it is no pleasant sight to see a favored land with its own princess to govern it, actually in the hands of another race, its trade taken by foreigners, its fields tilled, its resources developed: such is the case in Hawaii."
