Description:
The Special Collections Research Center (SCRC) houses one of the largest and most significant collections of rare and unique materials of any educational institution of comparable size in the United States. Focused on Virginia history but with nationally and internationally important collections, the Manuscripts Collection includes letters, diaries, journals, scrapbooks, business records, organizational minutes, and other items that provide evidence of events great and small and the daily lives of Americans of all backgrounds. The Rare Books Collection, with volumes dating from the 15th century to the present, is strong in dogs, Virginia-related items, early Virginia family libraries, gardening and natural history, religion, book arts, printing history, travel, science, and medicine. The University Archives documents the history of William & Mary from 1693 to the present, including a wide range of materials from administrative records, student organization records, and alumni papers to photographs, audio-visual materials, and artifacts.

Correspondence, papers, and a photograph concerning three Franklin, West Virginia brothers who served in the United States military during the Second World War. Collection consists of nearly 200 letters of outgoing correspondence penned by three brothers, Arlie, Arthur, and W. Russell Blizzard to their mother and sisters in Franklin, West Virginia. Most correspondence concerns training, work, and soldier life on military bases in the United States during World War II. Also included is Arlie Blizzard's visit to Japan and Korea in late 1945. Collection also contains a few pre and post-war letters and school papers.

Correspondence and memoir; 1862-1897, bulk 1862-1866, of Civil War soldier Sergeant Joseph Lawrence Pollard, Co. I, 26th Regiment, Virginia Infantry (Gen. A. P. Hill's division). Letters were written by Pollard to his wife Martha Elizabeth 'Pat' (Hutchinson Pollard at 'Rosewood' in the upper part of King and Queen County, Va. Letters describe camp life and respond to his wife's news of family and home. Letters were written from Gloucester Point, camp near Richmond, Chaffin's Bluff, Chattanooga, Tenn., Burton's Farm, in the trenches near Petersburg, and a camp near Hatcher's Run. Also includes typescripts of letters and two typescript memoirs about Civil War battles. Finally, a typescript account of the Battle of Midway during World War II by Joseph P. Pollard, a flight surgeon in the U.S. Navy Medical Corps is also available.

Winston-Salem Teachers College was the first historically black college to grant bachelors degrees in elementary school education. The collection also includes college documents from her time at college such as report cards and her admission acceptance. The collection also contains letters from two soldiers to Bee Graves' sister, Cleonis. The soldiers served during World War II in the Philippines.
