Francis N. Crenshaw was a member of Old Dominion University's Board of Visitors (1968-1976). Material relates to his service as member and rector of the Board. The collection also contains papers of his father, Captain Russell Crenshaw (1886-1975), that chiefly relate to his service in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

Buckles, Frank Woodruff, 1901-2011

Papers of Frank Woodruff Buckles (born Wood Buckles, February 1, 1901 - February 27, 2011), a United States Army corporal and the last surviving American military veteran of World War I. During World War II, he was captured by Japanese forces in the Philippines as a civilian prisoner. After the war, Buckles married in San Francisco and moved to Gap View Farm near Charles Town, West Virginia, where he worked until age 105. Collection includes incoming correspondence, photographs, military records, ephemera from his travels, clippings, notes, magazines, menus, and more. Subjects include Buckles' biography, his interest in genealogy and his local historical society, Chateau Carolands/Remillard, the commemoration of the 25th anniversary of Bataan Day, and more. The collection includes very little material from the World War I era, some materials from World War II, and more materials from Buckles' life after the wars. This collection is minimally processed.

This collection consists of documents and photographs held by the Gaillard brothers, Fredrick V. E. Gaillard and Charles C. Gaillard. The material pertaining to Charles C. Gaillard includes a letter written while at Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) training at Plattsburg Barracks, New York. Material relating to Fredrick V. E. Gaillard includes his cadet photograph album, approximately 12 original photographs dating from his service as commanding officer of the 377th infantry Regiment, and related World War II documents.

This flag is for Free France, which represented the government-in-exile of Charles de Gaulle during World War II, when France was occupied. The flag is a tricolour of vertical band of blue, white, and red with a blue two-barred cross (aka Cross of Lorraine) on the white band. The flag is on a pole with blue, white, and red fabric strips wrapped around the top over a soft ball-style finial.

This collection contains twentieth century papers pertaining to the history of the Fridley and Ripoll (pronounced "Ripple") families of Fayette, Boone and McDowell counties of West Virginia and their descendants, including the Thompson and Sarver families. Topics include the family homestead, finances, religion, travel, education, careers and military service. The collection features a variety of materials such as photographs, certificates, military artifacts, financial records and correspondence.

General Education Board
Correspondence, reports, statistics, maps, photographs and pamphlets related to the efforts in West Virginia of the early southern program of the General Education Board (GEB). The GEB, founded by John D. Rockefeller, is one of the most significant philanthropic efforts in the history of U.S. education particularly noted for its aid to African-American schools, teachers and students. In West Virginia it aided the African-American colleges of West Virginia State, a public institution and Storer, a privately supported school. For both colleges it was asked to fund building construction, equipment purchases and teachers salaries especially for vocational education and home economics. Mention is also made of conditions at Storer College and at other Negro colleges around the country. Other West Virginia schools aided were Bethany, Salem, Morris Harvey, West Virginia University, Davis & Elkins, and West Virginia Wesleyan. Aid was requested at these other West Virginia schools for endowments, salaries, building construction and purchases of equipment and books. There are also for these colleges selected balance sheets, resolutions, statistics, prospectuses and case studies. There is much material on vocational education, adult and extension courses, and surveys and statistics of libraries, schools and teachers on the secondary level in West Virginia supplied mainly by the West Virginia Department of Education. Other topics mentioned are expansion of secondary education in mining areas, establishment and maintenance of the West Virginia Division of Information and Statistics, the formation of the West Virginia Foundation of Independent Colleges, the employment stabilization of life planning institutes and war activities of schools in both World War I and World War II. Beasley was a Sergeant in the Army stationed at Fort Knox, Kentucky, Camp Rucker, Alabama, and then overseas in France and Belgium. He served with the 3rd and 4th Battalion of the Armed Force Replacement Training Center, a segregated African American unit.
