Special Collections includes manuscript collections, rare books, and the University Archives, as well as state, local and historical maps and photographs. Vaughan, Conan W., Jr., 1906-1990
The papers document the life of Virginia Tech alum Conan W. Vaughan, Jr. (1906-1990) and consist of photographs, correspondence, awards and certificates, newspaper clippings, files, and other literature almost exclusively from Vaughan's tour of duty (1941-1944) in Iceland and Europe during World War II, and his involvement in the U.S. Army Reserve in the late 1940s and 1950s. Of special interest are copies of correspondence between Vaughan and George Washington Carver, which run from 1928 to 1942.

Free France of World War II Flag, 1940/1944 0.1 Cubic Feet 1 box

This flag is for Free France, which represented the government-in-exile of Charles de Gaulle during World War II, when France was occupied. The flag is a tricolour of vertical band of blue, white, and red with a blue two-barred cross (aka Cross of Lorraine) on the white band. The flag is on a pole with blue, white, and red fabric strips wrapped around the top over a soft ball-style finial.

Born in Columbus, Ohio, moved to South Charleston, West Virginia in 1925. Attended Virginia Polytechnic Institute from 1937-1941. Awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor and Purple Heart during World War II. Collection includes photographs, clippings, citations, and papers collected by Lt. Col. John Coulter for his book on the six Medal of Honor winners who were students from Virginia Tech.

The Jack Shelton Harris and Shirley Jean Schumann Harris Papers include letters, photographs, a scrapbook, and more. The subjects of the content include high school, Virginia Polytechnic Institute, Jack Harris's service in World War II and the Korean War, and the Harris family. Jack Shelton Harris (1922-2014) graduated from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and earned numerous medals during his service in World War II and the Korean War. His wife Shirley Jean Schumann Harris (1924-2014) graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University.

Monteith, Jimmie W., Jr., 1919-1944
Jimmie W. Monteith, Jr. (1919-1944) was a Lieutenant in the U. S. Army during World War II. He served his country bravely and was killed on the beaches of Normandy during the D-Day invasion of 1944. He was posthumously awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor. Collection consists primarily of his letters home during World War II. Also includes letters of condolence sent to the family following his death, congratulatory letters for being awarded the Medal of Honor, newspaper clippings, and photographs. Collection also contains the correspondence of his brother, Robert P. Monteith, letters of sympathy following the death of his brother and his father, Jimmie Sr., as well as other letters to and from some of his family members. In addition, there are the letters and notes of John Coulter, who wrote a biography about Monteith.

This collection contains a set of thirteen "Make America Stong" posters that were published by the U. S. Department of Agriculture and the U. S. Government Printing Office in 1941 during World War II. These posters promote dietary needs, healthy eating habits, and ways to fight food insecurity.
