This collection contains the diary of Lucian B. Dickerson, a doctor who served during World War I. He is first stationed at a hospital in Roselle, New Jersey. For a brief while he was also stationed at Camp Merritt, New Jersey. He set sail from Hoboken, New Jersey aboard the RMS Aurania on January 8, 1918. During the journey, he describes the damage from the Halifax Explosion, which had happened approximately a month previous. Once in Europe, he describes his journeys with the advancing U.S. Army, in both France and Belgium.

Rust was stationed on the USS Montana from Portsmouth, New Hampshire, and discusses his experiences in the war and Navy.

Marion Nantz Fitzgerald Letters, 1918/1919

14 letters and 2 postcards addressed to mother and other various family members. The first few letters are from a base in the United States. Subsequent letters are from Toulouse University in France where Fitzgerald is enrolled, his aspiration to become versed enough in the language to use it in French Commercial Law and French Banking Law. Fitzgerald writes little of his movements and other topics excepting his overwhelming desire to get back home, especially once peace is signed and the war is over. However, he is with the 1st Division and his return home is not secured as of the last of his letters in this collection.

Items include a report about the Czechoslovak Legion and Battle's roll in the U.S. Army Transportation Service operation to provide transport back to Czechoslovakia; photographs depicting members of the Legion and their trip on the USAT America; and photocopies of Battle's U.S. Army records.

Postcard, 1918, written by both Mary Roche and George B. Roche. Mary Roche originally sent the postcard to George, a solider in France during World War I, on May 24 1918. The postcard includes a poem entitled "To My Lad in Khaki." On 4 July 1918, George Roche wrote a note to Mary on the same postcard and sent it back to her.

Papers of Hu Maxwell (1860-1927), historian, editor, and author of several county histories of West Virginia, along with papers and records of other family members. There are manuscripts of fiction, verse, and local history written by Maxwell, as well as a number of his manuscripts and publications dealing with forestry which were prepared while he was a member of the Forest Service of the United States Department of Agriculture. Maxwell kept a diary during the years 1901-1919 while residing in Morgantown, Chicago, Illinois, and Washington, D.C., which is extensive for the period of World War I and which contains notes on the diary of Rufus Maxwell (1855-1907).
