Maxwell family
Papers of Hu Maxwell (1860-1927), historian, editor, and author of several county histories of West Virginia, along with papers and records of other family members. There are manuscripts of fiction, verse, and local history written by Maxwell, as well as a number of his manuscripts and publications dealing with forestry which were prepared while he was a member of the Forest Service of the United States Department of Agriculture. Maxwell kept a diary during the years 1901-1919 while residing in Morgantown, Chicago, Illinois, and Washington, D.C., which is extensive for the period of World War I and which contains notes on the diary of Rufus Maxwell (1855-1907). Papers, 1886-1942, of Vice-Admiral Guy Hamilton Burrage. Includes commissions, orders, correspondence, photographs, scrapbooks and medals. Includes material relating to his command of the "U. S. S. Nebraskaquot; during World War I and the "U. S. S. Memphisquot; which returned Charles A. Lindbergh from Paris after his historic flight. There are also papers relating to his involvement in an attempt to resolve the Lindbergh kidnapping case in 1932.

Nuzum family

Collection of photographs from the Nuzum family of Fairmont and related families, including the Reed, Ferguson, Ostrowske, Winslow, and Diven families. The photographs include portraits and candid shots of mostly children, but also other family members. There are also portraits and candid shots of men in military uniform from World War I and World War II. Also contains greeting cards and the funeral book of Iva Nuzum. Most of the photographs include identifications and dates, though not all of them.

Correspondence, legal papers, and business papers of John J.D. Preston, his ancestors, and his relatives. The correspondence is primarily between members of the Preston family with topics being discussed, such as living conditions, business conditions, military training camps, Civil War battles, politics and campaigns, political personalities, education, schools, and the World Wars. Correspondents include John Preston, Rev. David Preston, John J. Davis, and John W. Davis.

Pendleton, Randolph T. (Randolph Tucker), 1889-1973

This collection consists of photographs and documents relating to General Randolph Tucker Pendleton's military service in World War I and World War II. The World War I items include:

  • A German propaganda flyer titled "The German People Offer Peace" (1918), which was dropped from airplanes over France shortly before the Armistice.
  • A circular letter (April 1918) from King George V thanking United States soldiers.
  • General Order (GO) 28-A (February 28, 1919) from General John J. Pershing to American Expeditionary Forces (AEF) soldiers thanking them for their service.
World War II era items include photographs.

The collection consists mostly of love letters between Ella-May Abbott of New Orleans, Louisiana and Walter James Rathbun who is based in ship ports in the United States, Europe, Nicaragua and the Panama Canal Zone. Letters from Walter Rathbun's Mother, Mrs. J. Baird of Floral Park, New Jersey and other family members are included.

Papers, 1900-1946, of Joseph Allan Christian, a Presbyterian clergyman and his wife Evelyn Smith Christian who served pastorates in Virginia, Mississippi, and Louisiana. Includes correspondence, student notebooks of Christian while a student at Hampden-Sydney College and Union Theological Seminary (Richmond), memorabilia collected by Christian while doing YMCA work in France in World War I, sermons and prayers, papers relating to his work on the National War Labor Board for Baton Rouge, La., photographs, and notebooks and pocket diaries of both Joseph A. Christian and his wife (many pages are blank).
