Correspondence, school themes and programs. The correspondence addressed to Lucy Bayard (later Keys) is from friends and relatives and covers scattered dates from 1871 to 1932. The letters are written primarily from and to Rice's Landing and Beaver (Pennsylvania), and Morgantown (West Virginia), discussing personal and family affairs. The school themes are unsigned, on the subjects "Old Maids," "Decision," "Thought Culture," "Institutes," and "An Aim in Life." The school programs are from Washington and Jefferson College, Waynesburg College, and California State Normal School, all in southwestern Pennsylvania.

A bound copybook of songs written from memory by Mahala Gregory, age 80. Contains poems, hymns, hand-drawn illustrations, and a short biography of Mrs. Gregory. The volume was bound by Berlin B. Chapman in 1967 and titled "Echo of Literature from the West Virginia Hills."

Photocopy of typescript transcription of the manuscript journal kept by Marcia Louise Sumner Phillips of French Creek and Buckhannon, Virginia (West Virginia). It contains commentary on local and family affairs, and on Civil War military activities in the western Virginia and Virginia areas. Other subjects include churches, travel, elections, holiday celebrations, and the 1863 statehood convention in Parkersburg. There are descriptions of and quoted conversations with officers of both the Union and Confederate armies. Military units mentioned in the narrative include: the Third Virginia Volunteer Infantry, One Hundred Thirty-third Virginia Military, Eighteenth Virginia Cavalry, Tenth Virginia Infantry, Second Virginia Infantry, the Ringgold Cavalry, and the Imboden Rangers. Military camps commented on include Flatwoods, Elkwater, and Baldwin. Marcia L.S. Phillips was the wife of S.B. Phillips, Captain of Company E, Third Virginia Volunteer Infantry Regiment. There is also an additional photocopy preservation copy of the journal.

Report of J.N. Prickett, secretary of the Houltown Sunday School, 30 August 1868; a monthly report of the Mount Harmony School, 1877; a term report of the Boothsville School, 1879; and registers from various schools, 1871-1881, showing pupils' names, attendance records, teachers' salaries, books used, and number of students studying various subjects.

Bratton was born, ca.1838, and lived in the town of Millboro Springs, Bath County, Virginia, where she married Townley Cauthorn, ca.1860. Correspondence is to Martha from other women friends, dealing with courtship, marriage, education, and domestic life Some are letters from Virginians pioneering in Illinois and Missouri, detailing the hardships of their new lives; and others are love letters from suitors.

Diary written in Fairmont by an unmarried daughter of Thomas Watson and Rebecca Haymond Watson, the youngest sister of James Otis Watson. Comments concern the Civil War, the Southern cause, Lincoln and his assassination, and the attitudes of Fairmont residents toward Southern sympathizers and returning Confederate soldiers.

M.K. Lowther (1869-1947) was a journalist and one of the first women newspaper editors in West Virginia. She was the author of the HISTORY OF RITCHIE COUNTY; BLENNERHASSETT ISLAND IN ROMANCE AND TRAGEDY; FRIENDSHIP HILL, HOME OF ALBERT GALLATIN; MARSHALL HALL AND OTHER POTOMAC POINTS IN STORY AND PICTURE; and MT. VERNON: ITS CHILDREN, ITS ROMANCES, ITS ALLIED FAMILIES AND MANSIONS. There are complete and incomplete typescripts, rough drafts, revisions, photographs and plates of her books. Also there are typescripts of news articles on Washington, D.C., the Potomac Valley, and Wood County. There are genealogical notebooks and correspondence and also correspondence to publishers concerning business arrangements.
