This collection contains incoming correspondence of Danske Dandridge. The majority of correspondents are members of her family, including her husband, children, parents, siblings, and cousins. Other correspondents include New York Independent editor William Hayes Ward, H.C. Hopkins, the Reverend Washington Gladden, and the publisher G.P. Putnam's Sons. Subjects include Dandridge's literary career, personal and social news, and legal matters, among other topics. Part of the correspondence relates to the Bedinger and Lawrence-Townley families. Papers of Francis Harrison Pierpont (1814-1899) of Monongalia and Marion Counties, West Virginia, who served as governor of the Restored Government of Virginia during the Civil War. Includes manuscripts, typescripts, printed materials, and photocopies consisting of genealogies, correspondence, college essays, speeches, official messages, articles prepared for newspapers, legal documents, pamphlets, scrapbooks, and ephemera. Topics include Pierpont's education; his career as governor of the Restored Government of Virginia at Wheeling, Alexandria, and Richmond; the West Virginia statehood movement; politics; and his later work in the Methodist Protestant Church. Notable series include Pierpont's personal and professional correspondence; his writings and speeches, which include several drafts of his reminiscences on Lincoln; correspondence and notes of Charles H. Ambler, biographer of Pierpont, in the Subject Files series; and a series of several hundred telegrams related to statehood and the Civil War. Pierpont's correspondents include Gordon Battelle, Arthur I. Boreman, John S. Carlile, Abraham Lincoln (copies), Waitman T. Willey, and others. Pierpont's granddaughter) to Professor Charles Ambler regarding documents of her grandfathers' which she is sending him and documents she will keep (1952); and a letter from Charles MacCarthy to W.H. Siviter, regarding Pierpont papers used by MacCarthy in writing his Lincoln's Plan of Reconstruction (1899). Also includes Francis H. Pierpont's appointment to the West Virginia University Board of Regents (1869) and a Society of the Army of West Virginia reunion notice (1884).

Holme, Frank, 1868-1904

Papers created and collected by Vause Marshall, relating to the career of Frank Holme. Holme (1868-1904) was born in Preston County, West Virginia, and became an illustrator for the Wheeling REGISTER, Pittsburgh PRESS, Chicago TIMES, and San Francisco CHRONICLE during the 1880s and 1890s; founder of the Palette and Chisel Club, the School of Illustration in Chicago, and the Bandar Log Press. Collection includes correspondence, newspaper clippings, original etchings, a wash painting, photographs, and printed materials. Subjects include the Frank Holme Memorial Group; the life of Holme and his wife, Ida Van Dyke; and an exhibition of drawings at the Chicago Art Institute in 1897. Correspondents include Vause Marshall and George Ade, among others.

Photostats of material in the Library of Congress include an signed letter from William Wirt to his daughter, August 31 1823 on Berkeley Springs; Thomas Jefferson to Mr. Rodney Washington, December 8, 1808 in regard to gambler Thomas Bailey's assault on Jefferson's secretary; portion of a Journal of President James K. Polk describing a visit to Bath in 1848; and a section of the journal of Samuel Vaughan noting a visit to Bath in 1787. The collection also includes a section of "Uria Brown's Journal" from the "Maryland Historical Magazine," volumes 11 and 12 (1915, 1916), detailing a visit to the springs at Bath.
