Collections

This collection consists of items related to Frank R. Pancake, including:

• Photographs and English class essays dating from his VMI cadetship (1934-1938)
• Personal letters (bulk to his parents), mementos, and photographs dating from his assignment to Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE) in the late 1950s
• Clippings from his time as VMI Commandant (1951-1954)

The James Keith papers consist of the personal papers (22 items) dating from Keith's cadetship, including a scrapbook fragment, three essays written for English and history classes, snapshots (approximately 17 items), and a furlough request.

The Jaqueline Beverly Stanard papers (approximately 20 items) consist of letters from Cadet Stanard to his family (dated 1863 to 1864), a telegram concerning Stanard's body, letters from his brother Robert to their mother (dated 1865), and two essays written at VMI.

This collection consists of one student notebook owned by VMI Cadet John T. B. Cocke, VMI Class of 1890. The volume contains copied poetry, civil engineering class notes, and a list of roommates in Room 18 of Barracks, 1889-1890.

This collection (four items) consists of items dating from John W. Steenbergen's cadetship, including a one volume notebook that contains copied poetry and notes, two essays, and his VMI account book documenting school expenses (1846-1849).

This collection consists of one notebook (approximately 145 pages) created by Philip C. Gibbs that reflects cadet life from 1848 to 1851. The notebook includes:

• Accounts of Corps of Cadets trips to Richmond, Petersburg, Norfolk and Rockbridge Alum Springs, Virginia
• Cadet poetry and essays
• Poetry by Sara Henderson Smith
• Addresses delivered before the Cadet Dialectic Society (a literary and debating society)
• Discussion of exams (1851) in English and natural philosophy
• Account of "An Oyster Supper---A Frolic After Taps"
• Account of "our last bible recitation" in which Gibbs describes the last session of his cadetship with Superintendent Francis H. Smith

This collection consists of the papers of Robert L. Thomason (VMI Class of 1949B), including:

• One VMI scrapbook (circa 1928-1949) that contains photographs, correspondence, newspaper clippings, VMI memorabilia, publications, academic records, and assignments
• One football-related scrapbook (circa 1948) that contains, newspaper clippings, photographs, correspondence, and VMI memorabilia
• Two newspaper clippings (undated)
• Four items of correspondence (1945-1948)
• Seven VMI publications (1945-1949)
• One map of the Lexington, Virginia area (undated)
• One football roster for VMI and Davidson (undated)
• One list of plays for the VMI vs. VPI football game (1948)

This collection consists of one notebook. The cover bears the notation "S. G. Wingfield-VMI-1864 & 65." The notebook contains brief farewell inscriptions written by Wingfield's classmates in 1865. At the end there is a short play or skit, likely an original.

The Spencer L. Carter papers contain two items dating from Spencer L. Carter's VMI cadetship. Included is a notebook (binding missing) compiled by Carter that concerns VMI football and baseball. It includes lists of teams, game scores, and plays.

The Thornton Terry collection consists of a four page handwritten and illustrated VMI cadet newspaper called "The Sunday Pie." This edition was published on April 18, 1887 by the occupants of Barracks Room 32. Terry was one of the editors.
