Abstract Or Scope

Papers, circa the 1930s and the 1960s-1970s, of the Bristow Family of Middlesex County, Virginia. The collection includes letters written to Joseph Christian Bristow, Jr., while at the University of Richmond and letters written to him while serving in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. The primary correspondent is Kitty Major, of Stormont, Virginia, who seems to be in a relationship with Bristow for most of their correspondence. Topics include Major's daily activities, events happening in Stormont and Urbanna, marriages, local gossip, and Bristow's lack of communication with Major, among other items. Other correspondents include Kitty Major's sister, Deborah Major, Bristow's parents, people with whom Bristow went to the University of Richmond, and other soldiers, among others. Included is a card mentioning the protests against the war in Vietnam.

The Gary P. Carperter collection contains scrapbooks, photographs, slides and papers collected by Gary P. Carpenter. Scrapbooks include postcards from various sources, depicting ships and airplanes with detailed descriptons of the ships. Photographs and slides document Gary P. Carpenter's life during the Vietnam War. Other papers include ephemera such as brochures and programs from cruise ships compiled by Gary P. Carpenter.

Family papers compiled by Katherine Williams of Berkeley Springs, West Virginia. Most of the papers are of the James H. Taylor family of Clarksburg, West Virginia dating from the 19th century. There are also records of the Irwin family including a genealogy, and the Civil War letters of private George Irwin, a soldier in Company F, 95th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. Other families documented include the Redman and Summers families. The collection includes letters, autograph books, family business records, genealogies, photographs, and other material.
