This collection contains the papers of Ralph Minthorne Brown, Virginia Tech head librarian (1926-1947), amateur historian, and naturalist. It includes materials on Virginia Tech and local history, including typed transcripts of sources gathered for an intended history of Virginia Tech. Also included are Brown's Blacksburg ornithological and weather observations, a bibliography of Matthew Fontaine Maury, and other writings.

The collection contains materials collected by Raymond L. Willard (1924-1994) in the 1960s, including instructional pamphlets on how to construct community and family shelters in case of a nuclear attack. There are notes from the University of Virginia and Virginia Polytechnic Institute for a class for shelter managers and instructions for rations, work schedules, and community entry for the shelters.

The R. C. Nichols Scrapbook is a scrapbook of Nichols'(1908-1976) time as a student at VPI from 1927-1931. The scrapbook contains dance cards, inivtations, newspaper clippings, photographs, and more. The scrapbook contains materials on subjects such as life as a cadet, football, and social events from Nichols' time at VPI and addtional years.
