Description:

The Albert and Shirley Small Special Collections Library administers over 13 million manuscripts, 3.6 million items in the University archives, and 325,000 rare books, as well as approximately 5,000 maps, over 4,000 broadsides; more than 250,000 photographs and small prints; over 8,000 reels of microfilm; and substantial holdings of audio recordings, motion picture films, and ephemera.

The major emphasis of the Department’s collections are American history and literature, with additional substantive collections in Virginiana, British literature, African-American history, book arts, the history of sporting and World War I, among others. In addition, the library serves as the University Archives, holding records of historic significance to UVA.

Letter from Henry Hanson to the Director of Health (Direccion de Salubridad), 1921 4 pages Box 9, Folder 15

Hanson gives an account of his trip to Panama. He mentions a modification of quarantine process. He describes sanitary inspections to various regions of Peru [lists names of personnel]. He expresses concern about the government's funding of workers. The yellow fever campaign is going well, but vigilance is required.

Letter from Henry Hanson to Wickliffe Rose, 1921 5 pages Box 9, Folder 15

Hanson reports on the yellow fever work in South America. He discusses the irregularity of mail, the effective use of fish for mosquito control, the yellow fever risk of Lima's poorer areas, and public health personnel. Hanson thanks the International Health Board for all of its support to the campaign.
