Abstract Or Scope
The Black Women at Virginia Tech Oral History Project was a multi-phase research and educational collaborative program of the Virginia Tech University Libraries and the Women's Center at Virginia Tech. The collection includes audiocassette tapes, DAT tapes, floppy disks, background and biographical information, and transcripts of interviews with some of the first Black female students and employees at Virginia Tech. The interviews focus on the entry experience of the individual into the Virginia Tech community and the interviewees' perceptions of the climate and attitudes within the university community, particularly as pertains to race and gender.

Includes correspondence relating to The New Yorker, including letters and notes from Charles Addams, Louis Auchincloss, S.J. Perelman, J. D. Salinger, and William Shawn; other materials relating to the magazine, including a manuscript poem by John Updike, drawings by Frank Modell, and newspaper clippings relating to various staff members; a selection of Newman's writings; correspondence relating to Virginia Tech; and materials relating to Virginia Tech's 1931 commencement.

The Christopher C. Kraft Papers consists of approximately 28 cu. ft. of manuscripts, particularly NACA and NASA reports and documents, meeting notes and agendas, and research materials. A later donation contains the manuscript for 2001 Kraft's autobiography. Kraft (1924-2019) graduated from Virginia Polytechnic Institute (Virginia Tech) in 1944 and went on to become NASA's first flight director and the director of the Johnson Space Center.

The papers document the life of Virginia Tech alum Conan W. Vaughan, Jr. (1906-1990) and consist of photographs, correspondence, awards and certificates, newspaper clippings, files, and other literature almost exclusively from Vaughan's tour of duty (1941-1944) in Iceland and Europe during World War II, and his involvement in the U.S. Army Reserve in the late 1940s and 1950s. Of special interest are copies of correspondence between Vaughan and George Washington Carver, which run from 1928 to 1942.

Materials include hand-written documents, published material, flat plate drawings, photographs, a sample of "melt-spun amorphous," and stamps from various countries.
