Kathryn Cramer Morgan, Charles William Cramer Family Papers, 1876/1970

Abstract Or Scope

Papers of the Charles William Cramer family of Morgantown. He was born in 1876 in Piedmont, West Virginia; graduated from Law School at West Virginia University in 1897; served in the 6th Cavalry Regiment in the Spanish-American War; and moved to Morgantown in 1901. Includes 176 page narrative by Cramer regarding his life from 1876 to ca. 1905, covering his student days at West Virginia University and his service during the Spanish-American War. There is a photo of Charles Cramer; and photos and other material of his wife Elizabeth Irene Littleton (Cramer), and daughter Kathryn Virginia Cramer (Morgan). Kemble White (1873-1965) Papers, 1898/1965

Correspondence and other papers of Kemble White, one-time law partner of A.B. Fleming, specialist in oil and gas law, counsel for the West Virginia subsidiaries of Standard Oil (Hope Natural Gas, South Penn Oil, and Eureka Pipeline), charter member of the West Virginia Oil and Natural Gas Association, veteran of the Spanish-American War, one-time president of the West Virginia Bar Association; and the West Virginia University Alumni Association. Additional items include: White's notebooks from language and accounting classes taken at the University; correspondence dealing with Mrs. White's gardening activities; drafts of White's proposals for constitutional revision in West Virginia; a Spanish-American War Muster-roll for Company M, 2nd West Virginia Volunteers; and two diaries (ca.1868). Subjects include: oil, land titles and leases; Fairmont Coal and Coke Company; Twin Mountain Orchards; Monongahela Valley Traction Company; Twin Mountain and Potomac Railroad; West Virginia political campaigns; and constitutional revision in West Virginia. Materials Collected by Mrs. Louise Morris, genealogist and authority on local history. The collection includes a notebook kept by J. H. Wherry, a student at Jefferson College, Pa., in 1859; a genealogy of the DeVaul, Haun, [F]ast families of Marion and Monongalia counties, 1817-1957; an essay on "Immigration" by George Whitham, 1896, favoring immigration restriction because of the increased number coming from " the Latin races of southeastern Europe;" land surveys from dead books, 1827-1933, mostly in Monongalia County: and a scrapbook of pictures, early 20th century, including WVU buildings (Martin Hall, the old library, The Drill Field area), Raven Rocks at Uffington, the Cheat River and Cooper's Rocks, Cascades on Deckers Creek, Oak Park near Masontown, White Rocks in Marion County in 1912, and numerous unidentified people.

Papers, 1886-1942, of Vice-Admiral Guy Hamilton Burrage. Includes commissions, orders, correspondence, photographs, scrapbooks and medals. Includes material relating to his command of the "U. S. S. Nebraskaquot; during World War I and the "U. S. S. Memphisquot; which returned Charles A. Lindbergh from Paris after his historic flight. There are also papers relating to his involvement in an attempt to resolve the Lindbergh kidnapping case in 1932.

Offley Family Papers, 1818/1916

Abstract Or Scope

This collection details the history of the Offley Family from 1826 to 1916 through correspondences, diaries, photographs and personal effects. Its creators include multiple generations of Offleys and their associates. The papers provide insight into the daily life of the era as well as major geopolitical events such as the Greek War of Independence, the Spanish-American War, the Philippine-American War, the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake, and World War I. Many of the Offleys served in the United States armed forces. The collection also includes photographs of individuals unrelated to, but, of the same era as, the Offley Family.

Photograph Album of 8th Massachusetts Infantry in Cuba, Georgia, and Kentucky, 1898/1899

Abstract Or Scope

Photograph album containing 84 pictures of the 8th Massachusetts Infantry. Pictures show men of the regiment in Matanzas, Cuba at Camp Thomas in Chickamauga, Georgia and at Camp Lexington in Lexington, Kentucky. The photographs do not seem to follow a chronological order in their placement in the album, but the description of most of the photographs are clearly annotated to describe the people and/ or locations depicted. One photographs shows members of the regiment boarding a train from Americus, Georgia. While the Infantry was camped in Lexington, the Spanish American War officially ended with the signing of the Treaty of Paris in December of 1898. In January of 1899, the 8th Massachusetts set off for Cuba as part of the occupation forces on the island of Matanzas. The pictures document their travel to get to Cuba, including the transport of their horses. It also features the regiment conducting drills and evening parades. There are scenes of the San Juan River and Matanzas Harbor as well as shots of buildings and forts mixed in throughout the album. There are some pictures of local sugar plantation workers in Cuba and the Cuban Cavalry are also featured. The end of the album shows individuals who were in the 8th Massachusetts. They include, Lieutenant Colonel Edwin W.M. Bailey, Lieutenant Colonel Stafford, Adjutant Thomas D. Barroll, Chaplain Geo. Sanders, Major 3rd Battalion Edward H. Eldredge, and Lieutenants F.
