The diary details Signal Corps activities during this period, and mentions seeing VMI cadets at Hanover Junction on May 23, 1864 (including his brother Samuel Travers Phillips) where they stopped on their way to Richmond, Virginia after the Battle of New Market, Virginia on May 15.

The diary entries date from October 1864 to January 1865, and were written while Black was serving in Captain John J. Shoemaker's Company, Virginia Horse Artillery. Included are brief accounts of various skirmishes, the Battle of Cedar Creek (Virginia), and campsites and positions that are recorded daily.

This collection consists of a one volume notebook and diary (approximately 45 pages) written by Robert A. Boyd. It contains personal notes (December 1864 to April 1865) and brief diary entries (January 1; April 3 to 13, 1865). The diary portion covers activities of the 1st Engineers Regiment during the last few days of the Civil War. The diary also mentions the surrender at Appomattox, Virginia, and includes a pencil sketch of surrender site. Notes concern supplies, furloughs, desertions, guard rosters, and maxims and quotations from books.
