Lewis family
Personal and business papers of the Lewis family, mainly of John D. (1800-1882), Charles C., Sr. (b.1839), and Charles C., Jr. (b.1865), of Kanawha County. For the period 1825-1875 there are papers of various members of the Ruffner, Dickinson, and Wilson families of West Virginia, Virginia, Ohio, Kansas, Missouri, and other states. The business papers relate to farming operations, the purchase and sale of slaves, salt manufacturing and trade, the Old Sweet Springs Company, coal, iron, oil, lumbering, railroads, and real estate in Kanawha, Clay, Boone, Fayette, and Nicholas counties. There are newspaper clippings, speeches, and other papers reflecting the Lewis' interests in the Democratic Party in the period 1914-1920. Settlement papers and correspondence regarding the estates of John D. Lewis, and Joel, Daniel, and Andrew Ruffner are in the collection. The personal papers include diaries, scrapbooks, photographs, and letters. Travel accounts in the United States, South America, and Europe are given in the correspondence, as well as comments on schools in West Virginia and Virginia; the building of a church in Kanawha County in 1834; missionary work in Colombia, South America, 1874-1875; Civil War and postwar conditions in Virginia, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Kentucky, and Missouri; conditions at Camp Chase, in the Civil War; and material relating to World War I.

Diary of Luke Wilcox, a Kanawha County farmer, merchant, salt well and furnace owner and operator, written in memorandum form except for scattered entries giving more information on specific subjects, such as the weather, churches and ministers, farm operation, travel, salt wells and furnaces, slaves, names of personal and business correspondents, coal, and land purchases. There is also an addendum regarding the Wilcox family bible. See "Scope and Contents" for additional information.

Contains material regarding George Washington and the Washington family, including the order book of the 8th U.S. Regiment stationed at Harper's Ferry, Virginia (1799-1800); typescript regarding Harewood, residence of Washington's brother (undated); New York Times article regarding observation of Washington's birthday (1862); and material regarding the genealogy of the Washington family (1891-1931). Also contains receipt for purchase of slave (1864); genealogy regarding the Forrest family and other families (undated); and a deed for a cemetery plot (1884). McClaugherty Family Civil War Letter and Financial Papers 0.01 Linear Feet 1 folder, 0.25 in.

Several letters and financial papers of the McClaugherty family of Princeton, West Virginia, pertaining to family affairs, estate settlements, and the early years of the Civil War. An 1861 letter from George B. Schmitz of the 24th Virginia Infantry written to Hugh McClaugherty chiefly describes the battle of Bull Run in July 1861 and the status of Confederate troops after the battle. A February 1863 letter from Edward McClaugherty of the 17th Virginia Cavalry to his father, John McClaugherty, primarily describes his recovery in a home near Salem, Virginia, and the health of his regiment. Collection also includes a few financial documents (receipts related to dry goods and taxes paid on slaves and horses and estate matters) and letters from the McClaugherty family from the 1840s, 1850s, and early 1870s. Major topics of these letters include health, weather, and news of family members.

Monongalia County Court

County court records consisting primarily of records of court proceedings including dockets, executions, orders, and fees as well as case papers and public records consisting primarily of land and property records including deeds, land, and personal property books. There are also some records of private businesses, private organizations, Sheriff's records, and voting records. This collection consists of three series and an addendum.

County court and public records consisting primarily of court dockets and records relating to these court proceedings, including order, execution, minute, and fee books. There are also various public records, including land records, birth, marriage, and death, estate settlement, and naturalizations. There are a small number of private papers of businesses involved in court cases.

Fairfax, Ralph

A tax book of Monongalia County, 1855, and an estate appraisement of John Fairfax for personal property at the Glades, and Cheat Farm, Monongalia County. The appraisement refers to the sale of eleven enslaved Africans. There are also two lists of delinquent taxpayers; scrip from the Gladesville Furnace, 1877; and a list of the hands at Clinton (Furnace).

Robinson family
Most of the letters are to Helen M. Robinson of Fetterman, Taylor County, West Virginia, from relatives and friends. Subjects discussed include housekeeping, fashions, farming, schools, religion, and the Civil War from both the Confederate and Union perspectives. There are frequent, specific references to the political and military state-of-affairs in the upper Ohio Valley region.

Cook, Roy Bird, 1886-1961
Includes genealogy and Civil War records collected by Roy Bird Cook of Lewis County, West Virginia. Series 1 through 5 were compiled by Marcellus W. Zimmerman. They include correspondence, church records, academic records, genealogical records, research manuscripts, and clippings regarding primarily the genealogy and history of Lewisburg and Greenbrier County, and the life and career of Confederate Brigadier General Alexander W. Reynolds. Series 6 through 8 were collected by Roy Bird Cook. They include military records and clippings regarding West Virginia units, the Confederate 31st Virginia Infantry, and other Confederate units from Virginia; there are also business and miscellaneous records, including ledgers, clippings, research notes, etc. Series 9 includes oversized material from earlier series.

Samuel Price, Lawyer and Politician, Papers 5.5 Linear Feet 5 ft. 6 in. (13 document cases, 5 in. each); (1 ledger, 1 in.)

Price, Samuel, 1805-1884

The papers of a prominent Lewisburg, Greenbrier County lawyer and politician, Samuel Price, who served numerous terms in the Virginia state legislature and was Virginia's Lieutenant-Governor during the Civil War. He was also a delegate to the Virginia Constitutional Convention of 1851, the Secession Convention of 1861, and the West Virginia Constitutional Convention of 1872; and he completed the U. S. Senate term of Allen Caperton in 1876. The papers include correspondence relating to local and state politics, Price's law practice, slavery, the Civil War, land speculation, and railroads. Also included are files and ledgers documenting Price's legal and political activities as well as personal financial records. Among the prominent correspondents are the Civil War generals John Echols and Jubal Early (1872) as well as the following: G. D. Camden, Allen T. Caperton, Charles J. Faulkner, William Parker Foulke, David Goff, Henry M. Mathews, and H. O. Middleton.
