Letters and accounts of James DeRuyter Blackwell, Sr., lawyer and poet, his wife Judith Emma (Edmonds) Blackwell of Warrenton, Virginia and of members of their family including their son, James De Ruyter Blackwell, Jr.

Collection contains correspondence from 1783-1831, of James Monroe written from Richmond, Virginia while serving time as governor, Paris while minister to France, London while minister to Great Britain, from Washington, D. C. while Secretary of State, Secretary of War, and from Loudoun County, Virginia after serving as President. Also included is a penciled sketch of Monroe by John Vanderlyn. Subjects covered in the collection include diplomatic service, education (advice to his nephew), United States foreign relations with France and Great Britain; the Missouri Compromise; and slavery. Among the correspondents are John Quincy Adams, John C. Calhoun, Henry Lee, John Marshall, Timothy Pickering, St. George Tucker and Monroe's uncle, Joseph Jones and his nephew James Monroe.

The collection relates to the James River Canal and Kanawha Company, which officially gained a charter in 1835. Included are a list of subscriptions sold to private individuals, a letter to the auditors office discussing current and previous subscriptions, a letter from a prospective surveyor and a list of tollage rates along the canal. Individuals mentioned are John Hartwell Cocke, and his son John Hartwell Cocke Jr.

Papers of the Jerdone family, 1753--1890 (bulk 1771-1845): letters, letterbooks, diaries and account books of immigrant Francis Jerdone (1721-1771), a Scottish factor who lived in Hanover County, Yorktown and Louisa County, Virginia, and letters of his wife, Sarah (Macon) Jerdone.

Includes correspondence, genealogical notes, obituaries, legal files, real estate material, notes concerning Land's End, Petsworth Parish (Gloucester County), Yorktown, and the homes of the Cringan family and the Mackenzie family, and Bible records of the Jones and Fauntleroy families.

This collection consists of two ledgers belonging to Joseph C. Farrar, a doctor in Mecklenburg County, Virginia. The first ledger includes accounts from 1848-1849 while the second ledger includes accounts from 1856-1861. The ledgers contain lists of patients, treatments and prices, and expenditures, as well as entries for both enslaved persons and "free persons of color" who were treated.

Parish register, 1840-1902, of Littleton Parish, Cumberland County, Va. which includes baptisms, marriages, and confirmations, some years divided into "colored" and "white."

Papers (including correspondence, legal documents, and accounts) of James McGavock (1728-1812), his son James McGavock (1764-1838) and his grandsons James McGavock (1804-1839) and Stephen McGavock (1807-1880). Many of the papers concern lead mines at Fort Chiswell, Va, slavery, agriculture, aspects of the Revolutionary War, and other. Included are a list of parish levies before 1776; receipts for supplies issued at Fort Chiswell, Wythe County, Va. and at Fort Patrick Henry, Tenn. for an expedition, 1776-1777, against the Cherokees; and county tax and fee bills for Augusta, Bedford, Botetourt, Montgomery, Pittsylvania, Washington and Wythe counties, Va. The collection includes genealogical information on the McGavock and Boyd families and letters written by members of the Cloyd family and by John Williamson McGavock while attending the University of Virginia.

Correspondence, 1857-1895, of members of the Mongle and Hughes families of Holston, Washington County, Va. and Evergreen, Tenn. Among the correspondents are J.J. Hughes, his sons William A. Hughes and Oliver F. Hughes and his daughter Sarah A. Hughes Mongle; and Samuel A. Mongle and James Mongle of Abingdon, Va. Includes papers, 1874-1884, concerning the registration of voters in Washington County, Va.; and accounts, 1832-1916, of Hughes Co., Mongle Hughes and J.B. Mongle Sons, merchants of Abingdon, Va. Also contains correspondence and papers concerning the Civil War; including an order, 10 Aug. 1861, requesting that J. B. Mongle and others patrol the 'Negro' quarters to prevent 'unlawful assembling of slaves.' (Fd 9) Also includes seventeen memorandum books.
