This ledger includes a list of slaves at the Mount Vernon Plantations, clothing alloted to them each year, inventory of cattle, Nov. 15, 1785, accounts with the several plantations, accounts with shoemakers, overseers, and bricklayers. With other Accounts (including ones from George Augustine and Lawrence A. Washington, Tobias Lear, John and H. Fairfax, and Anthony Whiting).

Report of recent carpentry work done at Mount Vernon: Getting new logs & gutter piece & shingles for roof & chimney of overseers house at Muddy Hole -- "straching" the well rope & fixing it to well -- preparing plow -- "to drawing the brick kill at dogue Runn" -- mending shoes -- drawing and jointing shingles -- "to trying up stuff for Bench plains."

Report on recent work done at Mount Vernon by 9 men and 3 boys: Hanging a gate, repairing fishing boat, dressing timber, giving sizes and amounts of timber -- sawing timber, hauling timber, digging brick earth and making brick yard -- painting -- making a batto [batteaux] for fishing.

Newspaper ad by George Washington advertising the rental of 4 Mt. Vernon farms--not including Mansion House Farm. Detailed descriptions, are included. Also lists for sale lands on the Ohio River, on the Miami, and in Kentucky. Deals with decisions Washington was making regarding establishment of a source of income for himself, the management of farms, and to find a solution to the burdens of his slave ownership.

Letter from Edward C. Turner to John Augustine Washington III, updating him on the conditions at Waveland, Washington's estate, while he is absent in the army. He reports that the overseer at Mount Vernon has said that the enslaved population is in a state of rebellion there. He worries that if the Union army takes possession of Camp Pickens; a large number of enslaved people have been sent to the area to build embankments. Autograph letter signed, 4 pages, with envelope

Letter from Edward C. Turner to John Augustine Washington III concerning the maintenance of his estate at Waveland while he's away with the army. Turner advises Washington that he should buy tobacco, candles, and tea for the enslaved people. The Union army has retreated from the local area. He makes a brief reference to a revolt among the enslaved at Mount Vernon. Autograph letter signed, 4 pages, with envelope.

Autograph letter initialed. Janes writes that she is sending down "four large shoulder of Bacon" to Mount Vernon, along with two enslaved men, Willoughby and Gabriel, who she hopes will be "faithful and useful." She writes, "have them comfortably fixed my dear son treat them kindly, and I trust they will both prove valuable servants. Gabriel will require a strict tho kind discipline. Sarah or Milly must wast and mend for them." Jane also writes that she has had a letter from West Ford asking for the money she owes him. She instructs John Augustine to pay her pew fee and then pay Ford.

Letter written by a sixteen-year-old John Augustine Washington III in Alexandria, Virginia to his mother Jane C. Washington at Blakeley plantation near Charlestown, West Virginia. The address on the back page of the letter notes that the letter was delivered by Jim Mitchell ("Jim Mitchum") with a note from John Augustine that says "I let Jim have $1.00 for his expenses." Jim Mitchell, who was later employed by the Mount Vernon Ladies Association, was enslaved by the Washington family at the time.

Fanny [Henley] arrived safely at Mt. Vernon--must act as her own housekeeper--cook Hercules left, so at a loss for a cook--sorry ague and fever have attacked her already--sickly at [Mt. Vernon]--Nelly [Custis] has been indisposed--Washington Custis at school at Princeton College and is much grown--granddaughters in city [Martha Peter & Eliza Law] both have little girls--she and General in tolerable health--wishes to see [Elizabeth]--"Fanny is I hope very happy here she and Nelly is to go to the city to see Mrs. Law and Mrs. Peter.".

This letter gives requisites for a servant needed at Mt. Vernon to look after and supervise household negroes--thanks Powel for continuing her enquiries to locate such a person--"To be trustworthy – careful of what is committed to him – sober and attentive are essential requisites in any large family, but more so among blacks – many of whom will impose when they can do it."--notes the postponement of the Powels' visit to Mt. Vernon until autumn--the best lots in the Federal city may be gone by then, building in the city progresses rapidly--Mr. Fitzhugh not moved to Alexandria yet--the Washington family enjoys good health.

The significance of this letter to Martha's niece Fanny is the mention of several specific slaves in the Presidential household. Martha complains about the sewing work of Charlotte and Caroline and gives her condolences regarding Giles, an enslaved coach driver who was apparently injured in an accident. She also mentions Hercules, the enslaved Washington cook who several years later would run away from the household. Misdated as '1790.' Autograph letter signed, 3 pages.
