Description:

The Albert and Shirley Small Special Collections Library administers over 13 million manuscripts, 3.6 million items in the University archives, and 325,000 rare books, as well as approximately 5,000 maps, over 4,000 broadsides; more than 250,000 photographs and small prints; over 8,000 reels of microfilm; and substantial holdings of audio recordings, motion picture films, and ephemera.

The major emphasis of the Department’s collections are American history and literature, with additional substantive collections in Virginiana, British literature, African-American history, book arts, the history of sporting and World War I, among others. In addition, the library serves as the University Archives, holding records of historic significance to UVA.

Agnes Patone scrapbook, 1944/1945 0.25 Cubic Feet 1 volume

The Agnes Panton scrapbook (1944-1945; 0.25 cubic feet) is a World War II scrapbook documenting a female marine's experiences. It contains memorabilia, invitations, greeting cards, and newspaper clippings. Also included are shoulder stripe patches for a male and female officer. Second Headquarters Battalion stationed in Washington D.C. area.

This collection contains diplomas, certificates, photographs, newspaper clippings, a gold watch and a gold medal, a scrapbook, and many other pieces of memorabilia that belonged to Arthur J. Morris, class of 1901 and a benefactor of the University of Virginia Law Library.

This collection contains the college scrapbook of Cora M. Aldridge, an African American student at Hartshorn Memorial College in Richmond, Virginia. Hartshorn Memorial College was a private college for African American women in Richmond, Virginia, active from 1883 until 1932, when it merged with Virginia Union University. The cover is titled "My Memories of School Days" in gilt. Alridge's name and her Vauxhall, New Jersey, address are written on the first endpage, as is the date of June 14, 1926. The content of the scrapbook chronicles Alridge's final year at Hartshorn. A photograph of Hartshorn, social and academic event programs, graduation cards, a flower, and newspaper clippings are tipped in and pasted throughout. The signatures of Cora's classmates, many with greetings and well wishes, are also present throughout the scrapbook. Cora describes her love for dancing, taking the streetcar, stealing food, going to shows in town, and other activities forbidden for students at the College. A tipped-in handwritten essay by Aldrige is titled "Do not simply be good – be good for something." There is a letter from 1956 relating to the 30th anniversary of the Class of 1926's graduation.

Persons represented significantly include James Southall Wilson (1880-1963) and Julia Tyler Wilson (1881-1965);Charles Marshall Davison, Jr. (1914-1995) and Alida Wilson Davison (1913-1995); and Katharine "Kit" Stonestreet Davison (1943-).

Mary Kean school scrapbook, 1925/1956 0.15 Cubic Feet 1 enclosure box

Mary Kean high school scrapbook from Lomita, California, 1925-1934; 1956. Album with ephemera and photographs in a "Memories of my school days" binding compiled by Mary Kean, at Narbonne High School in Lomita in Los Angeles County. Includes programs, a few photographs, certificates, and much more. Of special interest are a series of programs and ephemera for Girl's Athletic Association field days in Southern California. There is a license for a "back seat driver" which seems to be making a joke in giving this person license to criticize the driver from the back seat.
