Description:

The Albert and Shirley Small Special Collections Library administers over 13 million manuscripts, 3.6 million items in the University archives, and 325,000 rare books, as well as approximately 5,000 maps, over 4,000 broadsides; more than 250,000 photographs and small prints; over 8,000 reels of microfilm; and substantial holdings of audio recordings, motion picture films, and ephemera.

The major emphasis of the Department’s collections are American history and literature, with additional substantive collections in Virginiana, British literature, African-American history, book arts, the history of sporting and World War I, among others. In addition, the library serves as the University Archives, holding records of historic significance to UVA.

Branch J. Epes lecture notebook, 1850/1853

This collection contains one notebook with handwritten notes on lectures at the University of Virginia Law School, with some earlier lectures during his enrollment at Hampden-Sydney College. These notes seem to be lectures on philosophy and ethics rather than law, perhaps taken at different stages of Epes's matriculation, with reference to Locke, Hobbes, Bentham, and Stewart. One early lecture may be attributed to "McGuffie" suggesting possibly William Holmes McGuffey (of McGuffey Reader fame), who finished his career as an educator as a professor at UVa. With various ink ownership inscriptions to the front endpaper and miscellaneous attempts at a fancy signature, notes, and scribbles in the rear pages.

G. Firth mathematic notebook, 1796/1799

This collection contains one paper vellum-bound, handwritten mathematical notebook dated from 1797 to 1799 belonging to G. Firth, a student who attended Butterwick School in the county of Lincolnshire, United Kingdom. The notebook contains eighty-five handwritten pages of calculations and notes. Girth divided the notebook into the following headings: the "Mensuration of Surfaces," "Mensuration of Solids," "Timber Measuring," and "Vaulted and Arched Roofs," written in large calligraphy. Beneath these titles are definitions, rules, problems, and calculations. Some include detailed, finely drawn geometric, three-dimensional diagrams. Tipped in at the end of the book is a hand-colored drawing of a pink flower.

There are encouraging notes from her instructor, Marshall T. Fry, and several examples of her art, including woodblock prints and two colorful drawings of flowers. Her notes include motive, arrangement, color, shape, value, intensity, design principles, and lecture notes. Curtis also copied a "Schedule of 10 lessons in design" by Frank Alvah Parsons of the Chase Art School in New York. Immediately following this schedule was a list of materials and their costs for a "Winter 1908-9" group of lessons with "Instructor Marshall Frye."
