Guest Register from the Estate Belfield, 1931/1976

This collection consists of the guest book of Belfield in Lexington, Virginia, which was the residence of former Washington & Lee University Dean of Students Frank J. Gilliam and his wife Louise. The guestbook is an original leather bound volume of Shakespeare, published in 1778, which has had one hundred and twenty original pages replaced with a like number of blank pages titled 'Guests at Belfield.' Guest signatures begin in 1931 and end in 1976. Approximately seventy-five pages of the one hundred twenty pages are inscribed with names of household guests and include members of the Washington and Lee campus community, students and alumni, friends and distinguished visitors.

The volumes document various orders related to military appointments, court martials, drills, furloughs, inspections, etc. The first volume includes a roster of officers of the 5th Regiment of Virginia Militia. Most of the pages in this volume are blank.
