Types of material include publications, clippings, correspondence, photographs, and ephemera, among others. Abstract Or Scope

Papers of Helen (Froelich) Holt, wife of West Virginia Senator Rush D. Holt, Sr. who later become involved with state and national politics. Contains a scrapbook of material documenting Holt's work with the Federal Housing Administration (FHA) regarding nursing home reform. Scrapbook includes newspaper clippings, photographs, pamphlets, programs, and other material (1960-1963). Also contains items regarding the National Park Seminary at Forest Glen, where Holt had taught at the National Park College for Women (2008-2013); schools attended by Holt, including an autograph book, scrapbook, and yearbook (1927-1932); a congressional directory (1938); and an album of photographs from Rush and Helen Holt's wedding (1941).

Abstract Or Scope

Includes letters, postcards, and other correspondence retained from Sutherland's daily activities as U.S. Senator. This includes constituent mail and correspondence with other politicians. Much of the correspondence deals with appointments and patronage. Other subjects mentioned are federal and West Virginia legislation, state Republican Party affairs, the West Virginia coal miners' march on Logan County, prohibition, disarmament, bonus claims, immigration, West Virginia primary election law, the Armenian Genocide, the prosecution of World War I deserters from West Virginia, the potential sale of Monticello to the federal government, and more. The letters are organized alphabetically by the name of correspondents.

A 1980 addendum to the collection includes correspondence from individuals and organizations regarding women's suffrage. There is a mix of pro- and anti-suffrage sentiment. Primary topics of discussion include the Bristow-Mondell House Resolution, considered in Jan. 1915, and the Susan B. Anthony Amendment, voted upon 5 June 1919. This material is located in box 10.

Abstract Or Scope
Papers of Hu Maxwell (1860-1927), historian, editor, and author of several county histories of West Virginia, along with papers and records of other family members. There are manuscripts of fiction, verse, and local history written by Maxwell, as well as a number of his manuscripts and publications dealing with forestry which were prepared while he was a member of the Forest Service of the United States Department of Agriculture. Maxwell kept a diary during the years 1901-1919 while residing in Morgantown, Chicago, Illinois, and Washington, D.C., which is extensive for the period of World War I and which contains notes on the diary of Rufus Maxwell (1855-1907). Papers of a Morgantown lawyer and state legislator. Includes political correspondence of William Moreland addressing issues ranging from abortion to coal mining with a majority of the papers regarding the operation of state bureaucracy and the importance of organized labor in West Virginia. Addendum of 2010/10/29 includes Moreland's World War II (WWII) service records, family genealogy, and family photographs. Addenda of 2011/03/21 and 2011/06/20 include papers of William Moreland, and papers of his father and grandfather, James R. Moreland and Joseph Moreland. Addendum of 2014/06/12 includes some papers and many artifacts. Addendum of 2016/07/27 includes drawings of properties in Monongalia County and political campaign and other material.
