Description:
Special Collections and Archives at James Branch Cabell Library collects rare and unique research materials documenting 20th and 21st century Richmond and Central Virginia. Our holdings include manuscripts, personal papers, photograph collections, oral histories, and various institutional records. Books and other published materials include nationally significant special collections of book art and comic arts; rare books and periodicals; late 19th and early 20th-century architecture and decorative arts; and Richmond history, imprints, literature and serial publications from the late 20th century to the present. The historical records of VCU and its Monroe Park Campus predecessor, the Richmond Professional Institute, are found here as well.

The Betsy Brinson collection contains materials Brinson collected related to her activism and involvement in various organizations, namely the YWCA and Richmond Peace Education Center. The Richmond Peace Education Center materials include newsletters, as well as planning documents and ephemera for the Eyes Wide Open Project. The YWCA materials mostly include pamphlets, information on a YWCA children's reading program, and news clippings. The collection also contains miscellaneous newsletters and reports produced in Virginia or regionally about women's rights and social justice, pins and buttons that are largely political in nature, and photos from the NAMES Project AIDS Memorial Quilt. There are some syllabi and reading packets from Brinson's time teaching at VCU, but the collection largely reflects the organizations and work Brinson was involved with outside of VCU from 1974 to 2013.

The Etuy Elizabeth Hall papers primarily consists of correspondence and photographs created between 1927 and 1986. The correspondence portion of the collection includes letters and cards written to Hall while she was a student at Blue Ridge Sanatorium and Johnston-Willis Hospital School of Nursing, and during her time as director of the nursing school at Piedmont Sanatorium. These letters and cards are primarily from her mother, friends, and colleagues. Topically, the letters discuss coursework and training, the death of Hall's father, gardening, and other matters. The collection does not include copies of Hall's responses.

Harry Lyons photographs and papers

Eleven photographs of Dr. Harry Lyons, DDS, primarily during the 1950s when he was Dean of Medical College of Virginia School of Dentistry (now MCV). All but two of the images are in black and white. Most are portrait images or photographs of Lyons at the dental school. One image is of Lyons and his sister, Dr. Tillie Lyons Weinstein (MCV 1922 Dentistry).

This collection consists of materials created or gathered by Melinda D. Gales in pursuance of her thesis research. The collection includes drafts of Melinda Gales's Master's thesis, "African American Baptist Churches in Hanover County, Virginia, 1865-1900"; research notes; photographs; slides; negatives; and several magazines or booklets dealing with African American Baptist church history and architecture in Richmond city and Hanover County, Virginia. Areas of research include date stones, distyle-in-muris, and portrait bust stained glass use in African American Baptist churches.

This collection consists of materials retained by Melvin C. Shaffer from his tenure at the Medical College of Virginia (MCV) and later donated to Virginia Commonwealth University. The collection primarily documents his consulting and professional work in biomedical communication from his appointment as director of Visual Education in 1947 until his retirement in 1984. There is correspondence related to his position including his hiring in 1947 and some activities in Visual Education but no extensive documentation related to the operation of his department.

Abstract Or Scope

The Richmond Academy of Medicine Joseph Lyon Miller Collection of prints consists of engravings, lithographs, photographs, prints, and silhouettes dating from the 17th to 20th centuries that are related to the history of medicine. Many of the items were initially included in publications while others were issued as individual prints. The highlight of the collection is the silhouettes of American and British physicians. These silhouette portraits were cut from life and date from 1750 to 1850. A number of prominent silhouettists are represented including Charles Wilson Peale, William H. Brown, and Auguste Edouart.

Richmond Police Department Surveillance collection

Abstract Or Scope

The collection contains film and audio reels pertaining to civil rights and other activities in the 1960s and 1970s in Richmond, Virginia, and surrounding states. These include the H. Rap Brown trial, Lincoln Memorial Peace March, the Martin Luther King memorial at the Virginia State Capitol, Anti-Bussing protests, the Poor People's Campaign, student protest marches, surveillance of the Black Panthers, the Ku Klux Klan (KKK), the National Socialist White People's Party, and illegal abortion providers. There are also reels of police training videos, retirement parties, and the 1969 flood. In addition to the film and audio reels, there are also photographs of many of the events recorded on film reels, as well as Personal Information Cards.

This collection contains photographs of Vicki Umphlett during her time at the Medical College of Virginia Hospital (now VCU Health) where she received a kidney transplant in 1970. The photographs trace her recovery once she entered the self-care unit. Included in the photos are Umphlett, her parents and brother Henry, other patients, and medical staff, including doctors Hume and Lee. The collection also contains newspaper clippings about efforts to raise funds to pay for home dialysis equipment in 1968. Friends and neighbors of the Umphlett's helped to raise the funds as did members of the Navy.
