Abstract Or Scope

The Civil War Collection is an artificial collection of material, chiefly 1861-1865, pertaining to the American Civil War including items from both Union and Confederate forces. The collection includes official correspondence, general and special orders, descriptions of campaigns and battles, articles concerning the war, and artifacts. There are pardons, poems, songs, autographs, maps, muster rolls, pen and ink sketches of camp life, engineers' drawings, and a memorandum of signals used by Confederate steamers when approaching batteries.

The papers of Prof. James C. Livingston document his career as a scholar and professor in the Department of Religious Studies at the College of William & Mary. The collection includes research material, lectures and other talks, correspondence, course material for classes at William & Mary and the Christopher Wren Association, among others. The collection also documents university administrative information related to the establishment of Religious Studies, the Dean of the Undergraduate Program, curriculum reviews, and other matters.

This collection consists of mostly class notes of John Paul Carter while he was a student at the College of William and Mary from 1941 to 1944. The collection also includes papers relating to the Class of 1944 50th Reunion at William and Mary in May 1994, including an address given at a memorial service commemorating soldiers who died in World War II. Copies of an address given by Max Lerner entitled The Constitution and the Crisis State and a 1943-1944 William and Mary Course Catalogue are also present. Box 1 contains loose class notes, Course Catalogue, Max Lerner address, and reunion information. Box 2 contains notebooks of class notes.
