The papers regard Camden's purchase of land in the 1850s; his activities in oil production and refining, 1860-1875; his presidency of the Camden Consolidated Oil Company and the Baltimore United Oil Company; the affairs of the Stewart Brick Company of Parkersburg; the Virginia debt controversy; and his development of railroads, including the Ohio River Railroad, the West Virginia and Pittsburgh Railroad, and Monongahela River Railroad, 1879-1892. Papers of a Grafton attorney who was a lawyer for the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad and prosecuting attorney of Taylor County, West Virginia, assistant to Governor J.B. Jackson, collector of internal revenue for West Virginia, and a member of the Democratic National Committee. There are case papers and letters pertaining to McGraw's law practice; records relating to the purchase, sale, and development of timber, coal, and oil lands; and records of his directorships in the Grafton and Greenbrier Railroad, and the Iron Valley and Morgantown Railroad companies. The papers reflect many aspects of activities of the Democratic Party in West Virginia, ca. 1880-1899. There is a scrapbook of Rose McGraw relating largely to Mount de Chantal Academy at Wheeling. Fleming, specialist in oil and gas law, counsel for the West Virginia subsidiaries of Standard Oil (Hope Natural Gas, South Penn Oil, and Eureka Pipeline), charter member of the West Virginia Oil and Natural Gas Association, veteran of the Spanish-American War, one-time president of the West Virginia Bar Association; and the West Virginia University Alumni Association. Additional items include: White's notebooks from language and accounting classes taken at the University; correspondence dealing with Mrs. White's gardening activities; drafts of White's proposals for constitutional revision in West Virginia; a Spanish-American War Muster-roll for Company M, 2nd West Virginia Volunteers; and two diaries (ca.1868). Personal and business papers of the Lewis family, mainly of John D. (1800-1882), Charles C., Sr. (b.1839), and Charles C., Jr. (b.1865), of Kanawha County. For the period 1825-1875 there are papers of various members of the Ruffner, Dickinson, and Wilson families of West Virginia, Virginia, Ohio, Kansas, Missouri, and other states. The business papers relate to farming operations, the purchase and sale of slaves, salt manufacturing and trade, the Old Sweet Springs Company, coal, iron, oil, lumbering, railroads, and real estate in Kanawha, Clay, Boone, Fayette, and Nicholas counties. There are newspaper clippings, speeches, and other papers reflecting the Lewis' interests in the Democratic Party in the period 1914-1920. Settlement papers and correspondence regarding the estates of John D. Lewis, and Joel, Daniel, and Andrew Ruffner are in the collection. The personal papers include diaries, scrapbooks, photographs, and letters. Travel accounts in the United States, South America, and Europe are given in the correspondence, as well as comments on schools in West Virginia and Virginia; the building of a church in Kanawha County in 1834; missionary work in Colombia, South America, 1874-1875; Civil War and postwar conditions in Virginia, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Kentucky, and Missouri; conditions at Camp Chase, in the Civil War; and material relating to World War I.

Additional business records of the firm operating under the names of M.J. Garrison and Bro., in Wadestown, W.Va., including cash books, bank books and ledgers. Business activities include the operation of a general store; livestock purchase and sale; wool purchase and sale, principally in the capacity of purchasing agent for James Auld and Son; school and county orders cashed for teaching, and building of the Range Bridge. Quarterly post office financial reports; Wadestown Telephone Co., sale of stock and operation charges; lumber purchase and sale; oil land lease, drilling operations, sale of oil, line rights of way, names of oil companies operating in the area, and remarks regarding the well numbers and locations; and estimated flow. Entries for gas wells coming in, depth drilled, and names of drillers. Some entries indicate that Mr. Garrison served in a financial administrative capacity for various community enterprises, including the collection and disbursing of funds for the building of the Oak Forest M.E. Church, and for several estates. Other members of the Garrison family mentioned include, J.L., Maude, and Kate. The names of many area residents appear in these volumes.

Henderson, Noah

Personal papers of Noah Henderson of Monongalia County, West Virginia, consisting mainly of incoming correspondence and financial and legal documents from 1859 to 1926. Collection chiefly contains deeds, state and county tax receipts, a survey and plat, and oil and gas lease documents from the 1860s to the 1900s. Other financial documents from 1910 to 1926 relate to bank accounts and settlement of Henderson's estate after his death in 1920. Letters from relatives in the 1890s and 1900s primarily describe the correspondents' health and weather. Also included are several letters written to Henderson by Alpheus Garrison, a Union soldier during the Civil War in the 17th West Virginia Infantry, between 1863 and 1866. Garrison writes briefly about winter quarters, a snowball fight, food, Confederate prisoners, and his mill.

Okey Meadows wrote this history, entitled "Black Diamonds", which covers coal mining from ancient times to the present, describes cannel coal and its uses, and includes a prospectus for the Licking River Commerce Company of Kentucky. Other subjects dealt with are economic conditions of the early 1930s and the geology of oil shales.

There are also a few references to Civil War military activities and the development of the oil industry in the Wood County area. Mayors mentioned include C.S. Despard, John J. Jackson, and Peter G. VanWinkle.
