Description:

The Washington and Lee University Special Collections and Archives Department houses over 1,000 unique manuscript collections including those of the Rockbridge Historical Society, The American Shakespeare Center, and the Mountain Valley Preservation Association. These collections vary greatly in size, format, and scope. Subjects covered within the collections are diverse and include concentrations in American and Virginia history, regional genealogy, history of propaganda, Southern literature, and theater.

It also houses over 10,000 photographs and prints. Beyond our photograph and print collections, which include scrapbooks, images can also be found within the manuscript collections and University Archives described above. Our photographic holdings vary greatly in size and include numerous formats representative of the evolution of the photographic process. Strengths are local and regional portraiture, landscapes and architecture, W&L University history, including athletics, and late 19th-century travel.

Historic Lexington Parade Videorecording, 1930

The video starts with men in uniform entering Main Street, single file. It is believed that this is the Virginia Military Institute civilian band. (Following World War II, the civilian band was replaced by a cadet band.) In the opening sequence, Trinity United Methodist Church is visible in the background. The parade footage begins with a band (presumably the VMI civilian band), then a group of similarly attired men without instruments, followed by a series of vehicles. There are two fire trucks with the second one carrying a banner for 'Warner Bros. Silver Anniversary. The camera pans over parade watchers in front of the Lexington Presbyterian Church on Main Street. The film cuts and then resumes with a shot of the band walking back up Main Street. This is followed by footage of traffic and parade watchers. The film then focuses on the movie theater. The movie showing was Shadow of the Law with William Powell. The film closes with a banner across Main Street: ('Warner Bros. Silver Anniversary, August 1st to August 31st, 1930') and fireworks.

This collection consists of a videorecording made by digitizing an original 8 mm film, which is owned by Milton J. Elliott, III, who was a student at W&L during the 1956 Mock Convention. The video is in color and is silent. The footage of the 1956 Mock Convention runs about 8 minutes and is primarily of the parade. Sections of the video showing the convention floor and platform are brief and quite dark. There is also footage of a group of students picknicking at Goshen (about 3 minutes). The last 4 minutes of footage are shots of a wedding at The Homestead. It also consists of newspaper clippings pertainig to W&L Athletics, the 1956 Mock Convention, printed materails like the W&L Swing, and student papers from one of Dr. Leyburn's Sociology class.
