Coal Mining Disaster Reports Collection, 1938/1977

Mine disaster reports, official hearing reports, and hearing and inquest transcripts (1938-1967). Most of the mine disaster reports were created by inspectors from the West Virginia Department of Mines, and some of them involved federal inspectors. Other reports were created by the United States Bureau of Mines and the West Virginia Department of Mines Coal Mine Safety Board of Review. Also includes volumes 3 through 8 of the Decisions of the Interior Board of Mine Operations Appeals (1974-1977). The mine disaster reports and associated materials pertain to the following mining companies, with counties where the disaster occurred in parentheses: American Rolling Mill Company (Boone County), Amigo Smokeless Coal Company (Wyoming County), Boone County Coal Corporation, Christopher Coal Company (Monongalia County), Davis Coal and Coke Company (Tucker County), Hatfield-Campbell Creek Coal Company (Kanawha County), Hitchman Coal and Coke Company (Marshall County), Island Creek Coal Company (McDowell County), Katherine Coal Company (Harrison County), Koppers Coal Company (McDowell County), MacAlpin Coal Company (Raleigh County), C.H. Photocopy of eight page letter from John Spiker to his grandfather, Watson Tenney. In the letter, dated November 7, 1927, Spiker recounts his experience witnessing the Everettville Mine Disaster in Everettville, West Virginia, on April 30, 1927. He was on-site when the Federal No. 3 mine owned by New England Fuel and Transportation Company exploded and he took part in the immediate rescue effort.

Letter, two photographs, and six coal mine maps and post-disaster report related to the Monongah mine disaster. 1) The letter is dated December 6, 1907; it was authored by "Emmett" (Lester Emmitt Trader) of Monongah, West Virginia to Ernest M. Trader of McKeesport, Pennsylvania. The letter discusses the use of "certificates" as money in Monongah, references the recent Naomi mine (Fayette County, Pennsylvania) disaster of December 1, compares the conditions of the Naomi Mine to those of the Monongah Mines, and describes in detail the processes and outcomes involved in a dust explosion. There is no mention of the Monongah mining disaster, though it happened on the same day as the letter was written. 2) There is a mounted photograph showing the wrecked bridge at Monongah Mine No. 6; this picture also shows a power house and boiler room facility (ca. 1907). There is also an unidentified photograph showing men and women standing on a railroad track adjacent to a river (ca. 1900-1910). 3) There are six maps of the coal mines at Monongah, West Virginia pertaining to and contemporary with the 1907 mine disaster, and a 1909 "Report Sheet" regarding operations of The Fairmont Coal Company, ca. 1907-1909.
