Collections

This collection consists of the certificate that awards the Purple Heart to Allen R. Potts, VMI Class of 1943. The citation is for wounds received in combat during World War II in Palau, Western Carolines, on October 4, 1944.

This small collection, 1871-1955, primarily in Russian, documents the military career of Russian Major General Anatole Kalichevsky (1870-1937) and the travel diaries of his son, Vladimir Kalichevsky (1895- 1958), a petroleum engineer who spent most of his career in Texas and northern New Jersey. Examples of items relating to Anatole are his service record, military orders, his diplomatic passport, and his New York Timesobituary. Vladimir, a graduate of the California Institute of Technology, wrote several books on petroleum engineering, three of which are in the collection. The diaries cover the years 1902-1955 and refer to tourist attractions throughout the United States and Europe as well as academic lectures attended while traveling. Also included are family photographs and Russian orders and badges awarded to Anatole. All documents are in Russian unless otherwise indicated.

This collection spans the military and civilian careers of Major General C. Ernest Edgar III. Included are files (arranged chronologically) that document every significant United States Army Corps of Engineers assignment. Included is information about:

• Overseas service at Heilbronn, Germany with the 237th Engineer Battalion (1958-1961)
• Vietnam War assignments (United States Military Assistance Command Vietnam, 1965-1966)
• Commanding Officer, 577th Engineer Battalion Construction (1969-1970)
• Commander and District Engineer, Little Rock District (1975-1978)
• Other stateside assignments

This collection contains 68 buttons, 2 belt buckles, and 2 cockades taken from Spanish prisoners of war or from sunken ships off of Cuba. It also contains a commemorative medal from the World's Columbian Exposition in 1893.

This collection consists of J. Russell Major's World War II papers, including:

• Correspondence to his parents (dated 1942-1945). The early letters cover his training as a field artillery officer at Ft. Sill, Oklahoma (1942-1944) and other United States bases, including Laurinburg-Maxton Army Air Base (Glider School) and Ft. Bragg, North Carolina. Letters from July 1944 to May 1945 date from his service as a forward artillery observer in France and Germany.
• Military orders (1942-1945)
• Papers relating to his awards (Silver Star, Bronze Star, and Purple Heart).
• Service record
• Notes relating to his United States Army career.
• Four volumes of the United States Army official history (European Theater), with one volume annotated by Major.

This collection (16 items) consists of the papers of Louis J. Anjier, Jr., VMI Class of 1961. The bulk of this collection includes certificates and citations from his United States Army career.

This collection (10 items) consists of of certificates and other items, primarily from the military career of Rice M. Youell, VMI Class of 1914. The collection includes the citations for the Croix de Guerre and the Distinguished Service Cross, dating from his service in France during World War I, and a published history titled "Twenty-Sixth Infantry in France, American Expeditionary Forces" (July 1919).

The collection consists of photographs of the VMI Class of 1949A during their time as cadets (three items), Stanley Millimet's framed diploma, an album of photographs from the 50th reunion of the Class of 1949A, photographs of the statue of Stonewall Jackson on VMI Post (two items), and framed VMI themed artwork (two items).

This collection (17 items) consists of the papers of William A. Tidwell, Jr., including:

• Correspondence (dated 1965-1968) from General William C. Westmoreland to Tidwell
• Legion of Merit citation and certificate, awarded for Tidwell's service as Chief of the Reconnaissance and Photographic Intelligence Division in Vietnam (1964-1965)
