Anatole and Vladimir Kalichevsky Papers 1871-1955

Abstract Or Scope

This small collection, 1871-1955, primarily in Russian, documents the military career of Russian Major General Anatole Kalichevsky (1870-1937) and the travel diaries of his son, Vladimir Kalichevsky (1895- 1958), a petroleum engineer who spent most of his career in Texas and northern New Jersey. Examples of items relating to Anatole are his service record, military orders, his diplomatic passport, and his New York Timesobituary. Vladimir, a graduate of the California Institute of Technology, wrote several books on petroleum engineering, three of which are in the collection. The diaries cover the years 1902-1955 and refer to tourist attractions throughout the United States and Europe as well as academic lectures attended while traveling. Also included are family photographs and Russian orders and badges awarded to Anatole. All documents are in Russian unless otherwise indicated.

This collection spans the military and civilian careers of Major General C. Ernest Edgar III. Included are files (arranged chronologically) that document every significant United States Army Corps of Engineers assignment. Included is information about:

  • Overseas service at Heilbronn, Germany with the 237th Engineer Battalion (1958-1961)
  • Vietnam War assignments (United States Military Assistance Command Vietnam, 1965-1966)
  • Commanding Officer, 577th Engineer Battalion Construction (1969-1970)
  • Commander and District Engineer, Little Rock District (1975-1978)
  • Other stateside assignments
The collection also includes materials relating to Edgar's post-Army career as an executive and consultant, involvement with non-profit and civic organizations, and subject files documenting his long relationship with VMI, including his service as Commandant of Cadets and on the Board of the VMI Research Laboratories.

This collection consists of J. Russell Major's World War II papers, including:

  • Correspondence to his parents (dated 1942-1945). The early letters cover his training as a field artillery officer at Ft. Sill, Oklahoma (1942-1944) and other United States bases, including Laurinburg-Maxton Army Air Base (Glider School) and Ft. Bragg, North Carolina. Letters from July 1944 to May 1945 date from his service as a forward artillery observer in France and Germany.
  • Military orders (1942-1945)
  • Papers relating to his awards (Silver Star, Bronze Star, and Purple Heart).
  • Service record
  • Notes relating to his United States Army career.
  • Four volumes of the United States Army official history (European Theater), with one volume annotated by Major.
Major's World War II reminiscences, based in part on the correspondence in this collection, were published in 1999 under the title "The Memoirs of an Artillery Forward Observer, 1944-1945." This book is in Preston Library's rare book collection.
