These records document Linda Cooper's efforts to preserve the environment of Canaan Valley, WV, and to establish a National Wildlife Refuge there. These include reports, brochures, and other material regarding the development and creation of the Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge, correspondence, memoranda, and other material regarding the construction and development of the Davis Pumped Storage Project (a hydroelectric energy storage facility), and newspaper articles, newsletters, correspondence, essays, and other material regarding the West Virginia Highlands Conservancy and other conservation efforts and organizations in West Virginia. Also included are maps of the proposed Refuge and several slide shows from presentations on the Davis Pumped Storage Project, the Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge, and other similar projects.

Abstract Or Scope
Papers of Hu Maxwell (1860-1927), historian, editor, and author of several county histories of West Virginia, along with papers and records of other family members. There are manuscripts of fiction, verse, and local history written by Maxwell, as well as a number of his manuscripts and publications dealing with forestry which were prepared while he was a member of the Forest Service of the United States Department of Agriculture. Maxwell kept a diary during the years 1901-1919 while residing in Morgantown, Chicago, Illinois, and Washington, D.C., which is extensive for the period of World War I and which contains notes on the diary of Rufus Maxwell (1855-1907). Notes compiled by Philip Bagdon which were used by Dr. Roy Clarkson to complete his history of the logging town of Cass entitled Beyond Leatherbark: The Cass Saga. Bagdon's notes, composed of maps, tables and quotes from newspapers, correspondence and business records, are arranged chronologically and topically covering subjects important to the history of Cass, the Greenbrier River valley and east central West Virginia. Subjects mentioned are land purchases, timber appraisals, railroads, conservation and forest management, the lumber industry, and local social and economic development. Prominent names mentioned are Joseph K. Cass, James C. Lacey, John G. Luke, Edwin Mower, S. E. Slaymaker, E. P. Shaffer.

This electronic map catalog of 306 pages was originally generated in Word Perfect 5.1 by Dr. Peter Lessing of the WV Geological and Economic Survey. The original diskette is in the collection, but its content has been converted to a 372 page Microsoft Word text file that is readable by contemporary devices.
