Diaries include description of his life as a teenager working on a farm, people with whom he interacted, towns he visited, and the sermons at his church. There are also diaries of his life as a teacher, which include daily notes on what he taught. There are also descriptions of a trip that Thompson took to Ohio.

Nelson's diary, 1890, talks about his wife, Emma, his daily activities, his interaction with his local community, his job, among others.

The following information was provided by the seller: "Contains information pertaining to the 'Ward 3' voting district of the city of Portland, Maine. Volume contains about 133 pages of handwritten entries giving the name, address and occupation of hundreds of Portland's registered voters. Names are listed alphabetically and are organized by lettered tabs." "Several occupations relate to Portland's coastal environment [lobster dealer, sea captain, naval architect, seaman, sail maker, fish inspector, fisherman, fish packer, boat builder, etc.] while many others are relevant to the period [blacksmith, carriage maker, stove cutter, cooper, peddler, telegraph office, etc]. Additional notations include 'blind,' 'sick,' etc., along with penciled notations accompanying each voter denoting 'D' for Democrat and 'R' for Republican. Also included is a section titled 'Aliens.'"
