Fleming family

Business and personal papers, pamphlets, clippings, and photographs of Benjamin Fleming (1806-1891), and his son Thurston Worth (b.1846), relating to various business enterprises carried on by the family in Fairmont. These included a large trade in manufacturing, importing and selling hats and furs, general merchandising, fertilizer and hardwood sales.

Papers of Judge Gideon D. Camden (1805-1891) of Clarksburg, Harrison County, West Virginia, and papers of his grandson Wilson Lee Camden (1870-1958). Gideon D. Camden was a lawyer, Democratic politician, member of the Virginia Convention of 1850-1851, circuit judge, and state senator (1872-1876). His papers include correspondence, legal and business papers, surveys and plats, and printed material. Subjects include Virginia, West Virginia, and national politics; the railroad, oil, timber, and coal industries; and Camden's law practice. Wilson Lee Camden papers include correspondence, legal papers, surveys and plats, printed material, business manuscripts, photographs, map, and ledgers. Subjects include the settlement of his grandfather's estate, and extensive coal, timber, land, railroad, and oil interests in West Virginia and Western Pennsylvania. Hart and Woolworth Lumber Mill
Journal of accounts, 1810-1820, for the Hart and Woolworth Lumber Mill, located in Martinsburg, West Virginia. The mill was originally owned by Stephen Hart and Reuben Woolworth, but Walter Martin bought Woolworth's share in March 1811. Pages of the account book are organized according to account owner. Entries list all work, amount charged, and account balance. Work typically include the sawing of boards, planks, lath boards, and clapboards (ash, oak, hemlock, birch, butternut), related items (joists, nails, logs, pickets), and the amount of labor. The last page consists of a list of repairs made to the saw mill.

Davis, Henry Gassaway, 1823-1916

Correspondence and business papers of Henry Gassaway Davis (1823-1916), a successful businessman and politician from West Virginia. He was the Democratic Party's nominee for Vice President of the United States in 1904. The collection largely documents his business and political career, although there are personal papers in the collection as well. His business interests were largely concerned with coal mining, timber, and railroads. Types of documents include letters, reports, account books, and maps, among other material. Much of the correspondence is arranged alphabetically. The scope and content note of each record series provides substantial detail regarding content.
