Letter from A.P. Baugh [Abner P. Baugh] certifying that "after an examination of the dwelling house belonging to C.E.D. Burtis, situated near Bumpass, Va, it is my opinion that $250 will be ample to put the builidng in good condition..." April 20, 1934. Letter from S.R. Jeter, Ashland, Virginia, to C.E.D. Burtis in Bumpass, Virginia telling him how to change his beneficiary with Winance (?) Council #60. Handwritten notations about construction costs. Pencil drawing of a house and yard with a covered bridge. Reverse notation, "to A.G. Disosway from M.R. Disosway, March 3, 1847."

The Civil War Collection is an artificial collection of material, chiefly 1861-1865, pertaining to the American Civil War including items from both Union and Confederate forces. The collection includes official correspondence, general and special orders, descriptions of campaigns and battles, articles concerning the war, and artifacts. There are pardons, poems, songs, autographs, maps, muster rolls, pen and ink sketches of camp life, engineers' drawings, and a memorandum of signals used by Confederate steamers when approaching batteries.

Papers, 1727-1918, chiefly 1781-1875, of members of the related Overton, Ragland, Claybrooke and Hart families of Louisa County, Va. and Haywood Co., Tenn. The early papers are primarily legal documents, accounts and account books of John Ragland and Samuel Ragland and correspondence of the children of Samuel Ragland. After 1797, the collection concerns the legal and business papers of Samuel Overton, Thomas Overton, Waller Overton and Sally Overton Claybrooke. After 1810, the collection concerns the Claybrooke family in Tennessee.

Includes account book for a bar operated by Jones in 1852-1853 and contracts between Jones and Melton to lease the bar, lease for woodland and contract with railroad to sell wood. Collection also includes agreements to hire slaves.
