Benjamin Morris and James Conner General Accounts, 1831-1835, documents the settlement of accounts between the operators of a general store located in Staunton, Va. The accounts record debts incurred by James Conner through personal purchases from the general store and through merchandise purchases made on behalf of the store. Conner made frequent personal purchases from the store for items such as bacon, flour, tobacco, and coffee. Also recorded in the accounts were purchases Conner made for the store for items such as whiskey, brandy, and cloth and payments that Conner made on the store's behalf for freight and drayage fees. The transactions recorded in the General Accounts were taken from the original entries in other unidentified volumes kept by the general store.

Information found in the volumes includes date of registration; number of registered voter; name of registered voter; date of birth; age; occupation; residence; length of residence in state, county, and precinct; whether exempt from poll tax; if naturalized, and if so, date of papers and by what court issued; if transferred from another precinct, and if so, when and to what precinct.

Abstract Or Scope

Unidentified Wool and Cotton Manufacturer Ledger, 1834-1837, records purchases made for cotton and wool carding and the cash payments made for those orders. Each entry includes the customer name, date of purchase, quantity of wool or cotton carded, amount owed, date of payment, and the amount of cash paid. Almost all of the payments were made with cash, but, occasionally, flax seed was accepted as payment.
