Assorted Letters, 1897/1932 Box 1, Folder 5

This folder contains 15 miscellaneous letters mostly sent to either Helen M. Chapman Southerland or her husband Arthur L. Southerland. Authors include various banks such as the Home Savings Bank, Clarendon Trust Company, and Industrial Savings and Loan, V. Marcinkowski along with Arthur's labor union the Order of Railroad Telegraphers, lawyer C. W. Ford, a letter containing a note from John E. Wade along with a second letter from George J. Mueller to B. Matthews, Thomas Somerville, and sons, W. A. Smoot, and the International Bible-Study Association and Watch Tower Society.

Correspondence Between Helen M. Chapman and Robert M. Weir, 1895/1896 Box 1, Folder 1

This folder contains 10 letters written between Robert (Bob) Mitchel Weir and his 2nd cousin Helen Mary Chapman, later Southerland. Robert's maternal grandfather, Robert Alexander, was the brother of Helen's paternal grandmother, Sigismunda Mary Francis Alexander Chapman. The contents of the letters appear to be messages during a courtship while Robert lived in Noblesville, Virginia and Washington, and Helen lived in Gunston which is now Arlington, Virginia.

Alexandria Antique Arts Association Collection (MS134), 1971/1999

The collection consists of organizational records of the group, including minutes from the monthly meetings and membership rosters. Also included are copies of the newsletter of the American Antique Arts Association, originally named The Quad Anglo and later called The Journal. The collection includes newspaper clippings about the group and its activities, articles written by the group's founder, Orva Heissenbuttel, and articles about antiques and antique collecting. The collection also contains information about tours taken by the group, including pamphlets and brochures from places visited. Additionally, there is a group of photographs depicting members engaged in chapter activities.

Daniel O'Sullivan Collection (MS141), 1850/1912

The Daniel O'Sullivan collection consists of business records and correspondence related to Daniel Sullivan and his son Michael R. Sullivan who owned and operated a rooming house, and wholesale grocery and liquor store in the 1850s-1940s. Items also include a letter from Jeremiah O'Brien who fought for the 26th Regiment of the New York Volunteer Infantry and writes concerning battles fought during 1861-1862.

Correspondence with T. J. O'Sullivan, 1867/1877 Box 1, Folder 9

Folder contains several letters between Daniel O'Sullivan and his son T. J. O'Sullivan, most while Timothy was away at Georgetown College, now University, in Washington, D. C. There are a 2 or 3 notes between T. J. and others, including a friend who relied on him to hold him accountable for keeping his New Years' resolutions.

Included are the pamphlets for the Tour of Interiors of Historic Homes in Alexandria and Garden Week in Virginia and the registers from the Tour of Historic Homes for the 1934 to 1941 period.

Sangster Papers (MS294), 1853/1891

The letters in this collection center around the children and family of Edward Ford Sangster (1802-1883) an Alexandria resident, and his wife Mary Kendall Lee of the Ditchly Lees. Their children; John ( Jack ), Tom, James ( Jim ), Virginia Lee ( sister ) and Mary Edward ( "Puss" ) are all represented in the correspondence. William Wallace Bennett was the fiance, and later, husband of Virginia Lee. Many of Bennett's earlier letters deal with church matters and his impending marriage to Virginia Lee. There are a number of Civil War letters in the collection. A letter dated 1866 to Bennett and several other ministers from Varina Davis on behalf of her imprisoned husband is also included. There are several letters involving Daniel and F.E. Lee, and Sally Ford, all of whom were Sangster cousins. The University Account Book of John Sangster, dated 1856-1859 and listing expenses, weather and classes is placed in a separate series.

The Thomas Swann Correspondence is a small collection of letters mostly written by Helen Swann to her husband Thomas. A single letter from Thomas to Helen also lives with the collection, as well as a handful of letters by other authors. Helen's cousin Henrietta Alexander is included as an author of a letter, as well as a P. W. White, who writes to Helen's cousin John Chapman regarding a list of named slaves.
