The J. W. Tate Ledgers, 1888-1905, comprise four account books documenting Tate's blacksmith business in the Amberly area of Rockingham County, Virginia. Additional materials include correspondence, printed ephemera, and an incomplete autobiographical sketch of Luna Tate, J. W. Tate's daughter.

Autograph ledger dating 1776-1795 with miscellaneous information including purchases, loan certificates and numbers, list of clothing distributed to enslaved persons, and payments made to Jacob Young in 1795. Bound in marble paper and held together with straight pins, 32 pages. Several pages missing.

Ledger for Fredericksburg property, 1781/1782 1 Volumes Box 2

Bound book of unused lottery tickets repurposed as a ledger. Includes entries for the Fredericksburg estate for January 1781 and January-December 1782. Total of 188 pages. Account information written on pages 1-42 and page 188, remaining pages contain no written information.

Ledger, Mount Vernon distillery and fishery ledger, 1799/1801 Shelf F : *

In the handwriting of Tobias Lear (1762-1816), Washington's private secretary, and James Anderson, Mount Vernon's farm and subsequent distillery manager from 1797 to the time of Washington's death in 1799. Washington endorsed the ledger twice and approved accounts for fisheries, whiskey, shad, and herring.

Ledgers for Post Construction Projects, 1934/1964 3 Volumes

Volume 1 includes ledgers for 1934 Public Works Administration (PWA) construction projects involving the Military Store, Maury-Brooke Hall, the Utilities Building, and the Mess Hall. It also includes ledgers for 1936 PWA construction projects involving the swimming pool and the Barracks.

Lewis Pence blacksmith ledger, 1856/1859 0.25 Cubic Feet 1 ledger

The Pence ledger (1856-1859; 0.25 cubic feet) records work done by and payments made to Lewis Pence, a blacksmith in Edinburg, Virginia, from 1856-1859. Pence's clients include George Grandstaff, a local gunmaker and the owner of the Edinburg Mill. The Edinburg Mill was almost burned by Union troops during the Civil War in October of 1864, but locals extinguished the fire and the mill survives to this day as a museum and designated Virginia Historic Landmark.

Two ledgers likely documenting a sawmill or lumber operation in western Virginia or Pendleton County, West Virginia. The surnames present in the ledgers also indicate a potential connection to Pennsylvania.

Lund Washington Account Book, 1772/1786 Box 112, Shelf Bound Manuscripts/Ledgers

Contains accounts for the running of George Washington's Mount Vernon estate, its constituent farms and businesses. Entries document expenses for the fisheries, tailor work, voyage of the brig (or brigantine) Farmer to Jamaica in 1774, tools, clothing for slaves, expenses for various craftsmen, food, weaving, tobacco, and much more. Earliest entries are said to be in the hand of John Kirkpatrick, while the last two thirds of the volume are in the hand of Lund Washington. About a half dozen notations in George Washington's hand also appear. Quite a few later manuscript additions appear throughout, giving explanations or 'editorial commentary' on the text. Pages numbered 89-107 were removed prior to the original coming to Mount Vernon.
