Manuscript volumes kept by several generations of the Macon family of New Kent ["Ingleside"] and Hanover ["New Castle"] Counties, Va. including William Hartwell Macon (1759-1843), Doctor William Hartwell Macon (1819-1891) and William Hartwell Macon (1850-1918). The volumes are four ledgers concerning farming and medical practice and a diary. The earliest ledger mentions William Macon (1725-1813).

There are letters of the Marx and Gratz families as well as correspondence with Jewish merchants in Richmond, New York, Montreal, St. Thomas, Virgin Islands, Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Charleston, S. C. Prominent correspondents include Stephen Girard, Abel P. Upshur, William Wirt, James Barron, Littleton Waller Tazewell, and Henry Clay.

Collection contains account journals, some papers and other items of James M. Nicolson, a general merchant in Gloucester County, Virginia (1802-1869), an account book kept by Nicolson and Capt. John L. Hibble as Assistant Quarter Masters of the 26th Virginia Regiment, 1861-1864 (discusses slaves labors); a letter book of H. Yeatman & Co., merchants of Gloucester Court House, 1869-1870, which also contains some of Nicolson's correspondence; and ledger accounts, 1892-1899, for farming at 'Severn Hall', Gloucester County, Va. Includes a list of slaves hired out on 23 Dec. 1802.

Pleasants' ledger kept in Henrico County, Virginia covers 1769-1777. The volume includes a few accounts kept during 1823-1824 by an unidentified individual and a short story, "The Unlucky Man." Two ledgers, two journals and a daybook, 1802-1859, of Samuel B. Finley, merchant, of Lexington, Va. Ledger "B" (MsV Ame29) contains accounts concerning the estate of John Tate (Samuel Finley, executor); daybook (MsV Ame 31) contains an inventory , 1813, of goods put into partnership with William Shields and A. Shields and a manuscript arithmetic copybook, 1832; and ledger, 1842-1842 (MsV Ame33) contains notes, 1851-1867, concerning a fruit orchard.

Ledger, 1769-1811, of Seth Stowers of Hingham, Massachussetts. Includes entries for the sale of tobacco, fish, shoes, cloth, vineagar, and other household products. Also includes entries about the hiring out of day laborers, plowing, glazing, and making barrels. There are also entries of Elijah Stowers during the Revolutionary War, including for an ounce of tea in a hospital. Finally, there is one page of entries in a separate hand that date from 1808 to 1811.

This collection contains a letter, 1809 September 15, from Thomas Mann Randolph to Thomas Jefferson as well as a ledger recording business transactions of "Tuckahoe" plantation, including records of Tuckahoe Coal Mining Company. The letter is autographed and signed by Randolph with an endorsement by Jefferson.
