The papers of A. E. Dick Howard reflect his academic and professional endeavors. The archives have received five installments of papers from Professor Howard, plus an entire collection: The Papers of A. E. Dick Howard for the Virginia Commission for Constitutional Revision, received in 1981, MSS 81-4. Papers related to the nomination of Judge Robert Bork to the Supreme Court: these files consist of some reports and statements in relation to the nomination of Judge Robert H. Bork to the Supreme Court. Professor Howard was a commentator on the McNeil/Lehrer NewsHour during the confirmation hearings. Bill O'Brien, a student assistant, helped him to collect all of the information. Addendum [a]: Central and Eastern European New Constitutions: these files relate to Howard's involvement on the writing of new constitutions in Central and Eastern Europe at the collapse of the Soviet Union. The files were processed trying to convey their original organization and consist of correspondence, memoranda, working papers and numerous printed materials.

The papers of David A. Martin (24 boxes, 10 linear ft.) document his work as an international law and immigration lawyer and as professor of International Law at the University of Virginia Law School. They consist of twenty-four grey boxes (10 linear feet), organized in alphabetical order.

The vast majority of the Edwin S. Cohen papers document his position as assistant secretary of the Treasury for Tax Policy and as under secretary of the Treasury for the Nixon administration. In addition there is considerable documentation of his work in private practice in New York and Washington, DC, and teaching at UVA Law.

The manuscript of the book Court Tales, Trials and Appeals relates to the actual experiences of James B. Lovelace, a retired lawyer and 1926 alumnus of the University of Virginia Law School. He offers advice and points out pitfalls to the law student and young lawyer that they would not find in a textbook or case book. Although the cases were tried in North Carolina, and involve North Carolina law, the procedure is identical to that used in code states, and the principles of law involved are mostly common law. The book is primarily intended to further prepare the law student for his or her practical life as a trial lawyer.

This collection consists of examinations that the University of Virginia Law School administered to students between 1890 and 2018. It also includes a few examples of examination answers.

This collection contains notebooks, memoranda, and correspondence between Judge Gordon and the University of Virginia School of Law, the Supreme Court of Appeals of Virginia, the Virginia Law Review, and the law firm of McGuire Woods. The use of language is a recurrent topic in this collection. There are extensive articles and newspaper clippings about the use of plain English and legal writing, as well as a collection of Gordon's speeches and lecture notes on legal writing.
